My wife purchased a lap top about a month ago and it came pre-loaded w/ a trial version of Adobe Acrobat 8.1.2 Professional. We don't want to purchase this program and want to use the regular Adobe Acrobat. This trial version comes up automatically every time she opens a pdf. so she tried to delete it and it messed up her computer and we had to restore it ...needless to say we still have the same problem. She has a Sony Vaio / vista

What you want to do is change the file association for all pdf files. Right click any pdf file on your computer and select "open with" then look over your choices and select adobe reader rather than acrobat. Also make sure you have a check/tick in the box that says always use this program.

Yup. But make sure you have Adobe Reader installed first ;) It's a free download, available right here at Major Geeks http://www.majorgeeks.com/Adobe_Reader_d3852.html

    Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I downloaded the latest version of Adobe Reader from this website and tried to right click "open with" on a pdf file but I do not get the "open with" option. I only get "open", "open new tab", and "open new window". Any other suggestions?

Try Right Click - Properties - under the General Tab click the Change button next to "Opens with".

Ok...I finnally got the "open with" option by saving the file then opening it after I saved it. I checked the box to automatically open w/ adobe reader. What happens now is when I click on a pdf file it opens ...but seconds later the screen to purchase adobe profesional comes up and tells me to buy it or hit quit. when I hit quit it closes out my adobe program and closes the internet window that I am in. The only way it works is if I open adobe reader before I open the pdf file...but I don't always now when I am opening a pdf file....this is so frustrating when they put all these things on new computers.

You said before that your wife tried to "delete" Acrobat Professional. Did she (or you) try to uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs or did you try to delete the Acrobat folder under program files?

I would uninstall the trial version of Professional and follow the instructions above again to change the file association of PDFs to Adobe Reader.

Under folder options (Control Panel) you can uncheck the box for "Hide extensions for known file types". This way it will always show the file extensions (.pdf, .xls, .doc, etc.) and you will know if the files you are trying to open are PDFs.

I was going to send you here www.pcdecrapifier.com/ but it currently doesn't load. This program removes trialware loaded on new computers but since the site won't load, I can't see if the Adobe program is included in the programs it removes.
I believe that you have a choice of what you wish it to remove.

    - She uninstalled it from add/remove programs and it messed up the laptop, and we had to restore it but then the problem is still there.

    - I will keep trying the pcdecrapifier site ....maybe it will load later....

What do you mean by "it messed up the laptop"?

If The PC Decrapifier does not work for you, try CCleaner. What I would do is uninstall Adobe Acrobat via Add or Remove Programs and then run CCleaner. Run both the Windows scan and the Registry scan, and remove/fix everything CCleaner finds. When you run the Registry scan, CCleaner will prompt you to backup your registry before proceeding. Do the backup, then proceed.

I am not sure exactly what happened when she uninstalled it ... she said she had problems when she re-booted the computer and had to do a system restore.

I ran the pcdecrapifier and it seems to have worked. It froze up while uninstalling the adobe prof. so I closed it out and then used CCleaner and when I rebooted the computer it was gone. So I just wanted to say thanks for all of your help.

Ok ... sorry to keep bothering everyone ..but.. I finnally got adobe professional off of my computer. Know when I click on a pdf file when on the internet I get this error: There is a problem with Adobe Acrobat/Reader. Please exit Adobe Acrobat/Reader and try again.

Then I click the ok button and then the screen flashes and opens Adobe reader then I have to click on the adobe reader aplication and approve adobe reader then it opens the document. My question is why am I getting that error msg? and can I stop it from happening. This happens on every doc. but always works when I re-open Adobe.

    Hi

When you uninstalled Acrobat Pro 8, did you run CCleaner and the Cleaner tool and then the Registry cleaner ( best to always run it a few times until nothing is showing )? if not then unstall Acrobat Reader and do the above, then download the latest version HERE, if still the same possible older file from Pro is left so run the below.

Try this http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb401258 and for the download to the Wizard its here http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3564=ZQRI
