My computer has lots of problems that can't be fix, so They told me to install a fresh copy of XP. My problem is I have lots of programs I want to keep but was told I needed to find the execute program. I want to keep my Microsoft Office 2003, Motorola Phone Tool, i Tune, winavi and my Palm desktop, but I don't have the CD anymore. Can anyone help? Stranded with a very corrupt and slow computer.:cry sad in Georgia

Generally speaking, you cannot back up executables, or any full programs once they've been installed. Most programs, when installed, place different files and file types in many locations through-out the hard drive. It would be next to impossible to round up all these files for each program... and to then put them back in the proper place after reloading Windows would also be near impossible. Always keep your install CD's!!!! You can back up all your pics, docs, music, and the like; just not programs. You may have to just bite the bullet, save what you can, and reload..... good luck!

    Hi Princess,
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx
This article should help, it explains how to do a repair install. There is also System File Checker, and Check Disk that you could try before going through a repair install. To do a repair install insert your Windows CD in CD drive, restart computer. When prompted to Press any key to boot from CD, press a key and follow the instructions in the link. If your computer won't boot from the CD that way then you may need to enter the BIOS (Basic Input and Output System) at startup (before Windows loads) and change the order of the devices that Windows boots from (Hard Drive, Floppy Drive, CD Drive, Network). One step at a time though, I would start by going to Start, Run, type in
    sfc /scannow
    click OK
(there is a space between sfc and /scannow) this will run the system file checker first.
