I recently reloaded Windows XP Home Edition into my Dell Dimension E510. I have all of the latest Windows Updates and I have downloaded all of the required drivers from Dell's website (but who really knows???). My problem is that the computer will not recognize my Ipod, my Sony PDA, or my wife's iRiver. I run a removable hard drive through my USB ports and it works fine so I don't think it's a hardware issue. When I originally loaded everything into the computer; all of these devices worked but not anymore. This is really frustrating- any help would be great!

You probably have already done this but your post doesn't indicate it. Have you downloaded the drivers for each device? The extra hard drive is plug and play but the rest of the devices you listed are not. Also try to go to device manager while the devices re connected and see if there is a yellow mark next to the usb devices.

I've tried this and it did not make a difference- any other ideas? Is anyone else having similar problems?

    Hi

Is your Windows version fully upto date will all service packs and updates?

Its very possible that you need to install the Chipset Driver as this is one that does allow hardware items as in USB to be correctly identified, although your USB hard drive is working but may do due to the inbuilt mass driver, so do tell us if you have "any" yellow ! marks in Drvice Manager and by what as mentioned above.

and just in case this is the issue, install the Chipset driver from Dell here

as some of the fixes of this later driver than the supplied one are these:

Thanks for the advice. I downloaded the attached chipset and it did not help my problem. Additionally there are no yellow ! marks anywhere in the device manager. When I plug the ipod or my PDA into a USB port (I have tried using different USB ports and no difference) the device manager recognizes them as a USB mass storage device but that's it. What next-Thanks?

    Hi just a quick E

I once had the misfortune of installing a printer that renamed the port to the same name as the printers manufacturer and couldnt install anything else in that port, at the time. probably not the solution but rather a potential cause.
Also to help identify if its one issue or several, did all the non generic usb devices stop working at the sametime?
Also is a sytem restore out of the question?

    G luck

    Hi

Could try a trick I have used in the past with a non compliant USB port in plugging in the item concerned and then open Device Manager and delete/uninstall its driver/mass driver, then unplug and replug it in as all USB devices are assigned a reference code and this maybe corrupted.... just a thought.

Thanks for advice- I tried that as well. Could my USB issues have anything to do with the version of Windows XP that I am running? In therory I would not think so I am current with all the window updates.

Have you guys ever heard of a software conflict causing this sort of problem?
