Running WinXP sp3 for many years now... until my internet conn speed drops from 54Mbps to 24 or lower and everything slows to a stop. No new windows can load, all i can do i shut off IE8. Upon startup it looks great, but it all falls apart when i attempt to open a web page. Ran SpyBot, AntiMalware, TUT. No virus found, killed a few processes with TUT, but nothing changed. Last time this happened a few years ago it was because I tried to install a bluetooth device in this Dell Inspiron 6000- which immediately interfered with the Wifi. I removed it and its programs and it solved the issue. This time it just happened out of the blue. Please help- I need to apply for jobs and cant stay on the web for more than a minute before i have to restart the pc. which solves nothing. Sys restore did nothing. Now on the 5th restore it says it cant restore to that date- even though i chose from the sys restore calendar! I have tried everything i can think of, including shutting EVERYTHING down, and nothing fixes it. at the end of my rope here.
~bobby (please email me cause I'm not sure I can get back here and i can check it on my phone)

OK, update: ran full scan with SuperAntiSpyware for an hour and a half and it found zero issues. So it's not malware. The diagnostics in Intel ProSet Wireless are useless. All it shows is that its losing speed and slows all pc functions to a crawl- yet task manager shows cpu usage under 10% most of the time and the system idle task is the main user. Even tried to change settings to let Windows manage the wireless connection- same issue. So how can i test to isolate the wifi router? its in the next room... lol. seems to be working fine- other laptop is ok, desktop is on ethernet so thats like 100mbps. Gotta be a ghost in this machine. I dread hitting the 'post' button- could be a while...

I don't have any real idea here. But the lack of CPU use makes me wonder. I'd create a new user (Control Panel>Users) and then log into that user and see if you have the same problem.

That would tell you if it is an installed program on your user account or if it is system wide. Not much of a solution but might narrow down the issue a little.

Try going to the Intel website and update the driver to the latest version. Sometimes the oem website does not have the latest version of the driver. there may be a fix in the latest driver.

Do you have your wireless connection secured with WPA encryption?

To test your router, can you connect to by cable to see whether that changes your connection speed and stability?
