need help with avg

I am running Windows XP with all updated packs. I have been using AVG free edition until could no longer get updates for some reason. Figured I give "trial" version a try. This past Monday found the avg icon in systray dark with exclamation inside red circle. Could not find out what was wrong; but concluded the trial version was no longer functional. So I purchased the AVG Internet Security program. I installed that program and then did hours upon hours of updates for it. (I am on dial-up and cannot get any other connections here.) Been trying to get this program to work ever since!

Double clicking darkened icon in systray brings up the large window where all show to be working except Firewall, E-mail scanner, web shield and resident shield. All information to get these to work leads to dead ends.

Tools > advanced settings = brings up "avg user interface" that gives me options of reporting or not reporting to Microsoft.

"Configuration" button under "firewall" component brings up same "avg user interfact" with reporting options.

"Manage exceptions" button under "resident shield" component brings up same "avg user interfact" with reporting options.

Going to "help" > "get help online" takes me to the website; however, I am unable to find anyway of contacting technicians about these problems in this program. (I was able to find an FAQ about resident shield, which suggested I download, install & run "reset_access_avg8_en.exe", which I did. This set up folder called "avgTEMP" wherein was the "reset_access.bat" file I was suppose to double click. I did so only to find it had corrected nothing. I did finally find a way to send a copy of the "permavg.7z" to avg technicians and sent it last night. All other efforts to contact techs bring up an "error" page with apologies and suggesting I try again later.

I tried to run an avg scan of my computer only to find out it would not run. Now I am real concerned my pc is unprotected, even though so many components of this avg program state they are "active".

Can anyone help me make sense out of all this so I can get this avg program to working? (No matter how many reboots, the avg icon in the systray is still dark with red circle having exclamation point inside it. I am worried!)

AVG has now come out with Ver. 8. The best thing to try is to first uninstall AVG, reboot, then download latest version from MG site. Then install and reboot. If this doesn't work at first, it is worthwhile to go through another cycle, I've solved several problems this way.

If that doesn't work, depending upon other advice you may receive here, this is the link to their free support forum:

The original poster stated that they already "purchased/bought" AVG Internet Security. So, for them to uninstall AVG and DL the free version would be a waste of their money, wouldn't it?

Oops, my bad, didn't register that sentence.

I am not familar with the pay version but I would guess the same procedure may apply, as long as you can redownload for no charge. Years ago I used McCaffee and I recall they had some such provision.

Any of these are bound to be challenging with dial-up. Most downloads are of such a size these days that dial-up is difficult to work with.

    Thanks for catching that.

So you are essentially saying, uninstall and re-install all over again, including updates. :((

Since first posting I have discovered "none" of AVG contacts afford me access to a technician, even though my license/registration is validated.

I also spoke with my pc repair man and was told avg is now a pc "hog" like Norton's use to be and many report the 2009 program not working. I am so very discouraged now...

    motdaugrnds,

If your resident shield and your firewall aren't working, that is a serious problem.

I was just looking around their website. You're right, it's hard to find anyplace to submit a technical support question. It took some hunting around, but I think I found what may help you. Here's a place with e-mail addresses:

    http://www.avg.com/contacts

    And the support page:

    http://www.avg.com/support-existing

I see there's a place there to enter your license number, so hopefully that will get you some assistance.

If you don't get the help you need, it might be worth your while requesting a refund. (Years ago I paid for Trend's PC-Cillin and I just couldn't get it to work, not matter what I did. I asked for a refund, and much to my surprise, they granted it. I had to sign some affidavit promising I wouldn't use the software, which was fine by me because it just froze my computer anyway...) You really need to get your machine protected as soon as possible.

    Good luck!

Amethyst, thank you so much for taking the time to go to that site. I am following those links you gave and seeing what I can find out. However, I am quite disturbed by this and have pretty much decided to get rid of avg and go with another (probably Norton since I have been told the 2009 version is not the "hog" it use to be).

I pulled up my control panel and clicked to remove this avg program. I received a message "installer initialization failed due to the following eror: warning: internal error. Dialog with id 'Avg4EsDlg' was not found in the setup." Now I have a licensed avg program that does not work and I cannot uninstall. This is really frustrating. I would at least like to get it off my computer!

Edited to provide update: I went to both of those links and discover they are the very same places I had tried over and over earlier. Just more run-arounds and no resolution. :-o

2nd Edit: I actually found an avg forum (not an official avg forum; just made up of avg users); but was unable to post on it; was unable to find a way to "register" to post on it either. I was able to read some of what had been posted and it showed me others were having the same (and similar) problems as I. This is quite sad!

Do you still have the avg .exe program that you paid for and downloaded from AVG?

I use the AVG free version, and the newest update of that one has been having problems of its own for some people. (I haven't tried it yet, I'm hoping by Feb 20th they have the worst of it sorted out.) The moderators on the free forum have been advising people to 'download the latest version' of AVG, and then use that to install. The free version shows 'repair' and 'uninstall' in the list of options if you already have the program installed, along with 'install'. If you have the paid-for program that you downloaded, maybe you could try that and see if the options to repair or uninstall show up as options. 'Repair' might give you a workable program, or you could select 'uninstall'...or you could choose repair and if the program still doesn't work, run the installation again and choose 'uninstall'. If you have any other protection programs running in the background, like Spybot S & D's teatimer, for example, or Windows Defender, AVG recommends that those be turned off before installing AVG, but I don't think you should have to turn off the Windows Firewall. (Not sure about this, however, but I would think AVG would turn off the Windows Firewall when it installs its own.) They say reboot twice after installing AVG before re-enabling the other protection programs.

The other AVG forum that you mentioned, was it this one?

You should be able to register on this one. I have registered in the past, although it really isn't for the free program. Actually I registered there before I ever tried AVG free because I wanted to ask questions about it, and I didn't know about the free forum.

AVG does have this on their site, but they recommend it only if all else fails. And make sure you use the right version.

I found this: http://freeforum.avg.com/ for the free forum, and if you click on the link at the top you go here: http://registration-free.avg.com/ww.registration which apparently gives you access to the forums.

However, as a PAID AVG user, you should go here: http://www.avg.com/support-existing and enter your licence number then ask them to help resolve your problems. I for one would appreciate knowing how their customer support stacks up, if you care to come back when they've solved your problem?

    cheers,
    Marc

Although I've had my clients using AVG Free for quite a while, I find their latest versions to be getting somewhat bloated. Because of this, I'm starting to tell people to use Avira (http://www.free-av.com/). That said, I've found AVG to be a good quality product that is usually quite reliable, so if you've paid don't give up yet.
