    Hi guys.
Don't know if this is the right thread, so apologies if it isn't.
I bought the Motown No. 1s on a 10 CD disc from Amazon. My sister wants a copy of it, but I don't think I have a CD drive. I have copied many DVDs for her, but, do I need a CD something or other to burn these cds for her?
    I can't see a 'cd' drive, just a DVD drive e...
    Thank you

    Hi,

A DVD drive will also read and write CDs so no problem there. A stand-alone CD player ( like a boom box or car stereo) will only read CD discs so you will need some blank CDs to burn the copies onto if that is what she will be playing the CDs on.

Both CDBurnerXP and Imgburn should be capable of doing the ripping if you don't already have a good burning program. I think CDBunrnerXP will do it in one step making the copy directly from the disc. I use Imgburn and make a copy of the CD to the computer HD and then write that ISO file to a blank CD (it is just the method I have always used and is good when the CD might be scratched or something but on new CDs, CDBurnerXP should work fine with one less step). Pay attention when installing the programs to be sure to opt out of any toolbars or other extra software you don't want. The extras aren't necessary but just advertising.

If you need help figuring out the copying let us know. It is fairly simple but a bit time consuming for 10 discs.

Thank you for pointing me in the direction of the CDBurnerX but, I have now tried to burn three brand new CDs and I keep receiving this ERROR message:

'An error occurred while burning the disc. Most likely the disc is not usable. Usually, these errors happen if the inserted media is not compatible to the drive or due to poor quality'

Does this mean I have a broken CD drive?

Thank you so much for your help, but this is way too technical for me. Thanks so much anyway :)

What does the spindle of CDs say on the outside? Is it CD-R? What brand?

One other thing it try is Imgburn. Sometimes some software has problems with a brand of media where another won't. If Imgburn fails then you know it probably the media or the drive.

Install Imgburn. With your CD in the tray, start Imgburn and click the "Create Image File from Disc". Select a file location as the Destination and hit the large double icon at the bottom to write the new ISO file to your HD. Then close imgburn and open it again. Put your blank CD in the tray. Now select "Write Image File to Disc". Choose the ISO file you just created as the Source. Click the double icon to write the new CD. See if it succeeds or gives you an error. If an error we can see if the error is more informative or also mentions a problem with the blank media.

Since this brand is found in the UK and not the US, my location, I went searching to see how reliable they are.
I found this comment from Oct. 2012
"Junk discs in my opinion, got these for £3.25 for 25 in tesco. Every second one would fail at the end in my dvd recorder and I have to start recording again. Haven't had this problem since I last used cheap maxwell discs a few years back. Usually only use Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden and no coasters ever with them."

I'd say buy a better CD-R and see if you still have the problem before you decide the burner is bad.

    Thank you!
I will do that. Tesco is a big supermarket chain in the UK. I'll tell my sister.
In saying that, just this morning I tried again with a program called 'CDBurnerXP' and it did all it should have done. I went through the commands and it showed me it was burning, with a progress marker, then it 'closed' the CD and so, I tried it on MY own CD player, and it wouldn't play, I got the 'Er' message. I have no problems with MY cd at all, but wouldn't play this disc...Weird.

    :(

Thank you, it was the CDBurnerXP which worked best for me. I saw that it was burning the disc. :)

Depending on the way it was burned, you do know that home burned CDs will not play in all standalone CD players? Does it play in the computer?
I have CDs that will play in the car but not in the standalone CD players.

The fact that it doesn't play in the standalone doesn't show that it is not burning correctly; it merely shows that the files are in a form that the standalone can't read.

Guys, thank you all for your help on this. But, I have wasted mine and your time long enough now. I am off to buy a separate CD player! :) Thanks though :)
