Need help with disappearing onboard sound

    Hi forums,

I'm currently having some problems with my sound. For awhile now it has been 'disappearing'. Once in awhile when I turn on my PC and it logs into Windows, there is no sound coming from my speakers. I check Device Manager for any unknown audio devices, and it doesn't have anything related to the onboard devices, and my Realtek HD Audio codec (i think that is what's it called) and my Microsoft High Definition codec is missing.

I know the reason why it may be happening: When I turn my computer on, and it shows the PCI devices and IRQ screen, (it's the same screen as the "Verifying DMI Pool" screen, I don't know what's it called lol) it doesn't have my Multimedia Device in the list.

I have installed all the necessary drivers already, and when it feels like reappearing, it shows up at the IRQ screen, which is when I know my audio is going to work. While most of the time it's not listed, I restart my computer in hope of it being found again. (I've found this out just today; my first startup had no sound, but my second and third startups had sound when the multimedia device was found, then the multimedia device disappeared from my IRQ list, and I had no sound from that point on.)

Currently my onboard sound is gone again, so I come to these forums in hope of fixing this problem. My post may seem a little confusing, but I'll try to explain it a little better if needed. Any help or suggestions would be really great... thanks!

    My system:
    Q6600 @ 3.0
    Gigabyte P35-DQ6 rev 1.0 (f8 bios)
    2GB G.Skill RAM
    160 Western Digital Hard Drive
    650w Antec Earthwatts
    EVGA 8800GT 512MB

Did you also install your chipset drivers?
What OS are you using? XP SP3?

Yes, I've installed the chipset drivers. My operating system is Windows XP Home SP2. Sorry about not including it earlier, I can't find the edit button. Thanks.

    Quick update:

I tried installing a Creative sound card (SB0570), but it somehow conflicts with my onboard LAN. I check in device manager and there is yellow "!" icons next to the devices.

Can it be conflicting IRQ's? Hope to hear suggestions, and I appreciate any help that I get.

    It could be.
Can you uninstall your LAN driver, reboot, then install it again?

Use Everest to get a report of your system’s hardware, OS, and drivers. Upload the report as an attachment.
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware related pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
Now come back here to your thread.
Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box (near the bottom of the page), scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box.

    Hi musksnipe, thanks for helping.

I did as you said in your post, and this is the report. I couldn't uninstall the LAN drivers successfully. (as soon as I started up the computer Windows had already installed the ethernet drivers). The uninstall tool for the lan device wasn't in the Add/Remove programs section, so I uninstalled it using Device Manager (right click>uninstall).

    Thanks again for the help

EDIT: This is without the Creative sound card installed; Azalia Codec in bios is enabled (its on auto), and my drivers for Realtek Hd audio and the microsoft high definition audio are still installed in the add/remove programs panel

Are you sure the chipset drivers actually installed?
There are many entries in Everest missing in the chipset area, which usually means corrupt or missing chipset driver.
Here it is to try again:
    gigabyte_motherboard_driver_chipset_intel.exe

In Device Manager>System devices, is there either Realtek HD or the MS UAA Bus driver?
Is there an Unknown PCI device in Other devices?
What about the Azalia? (It might just show as Realtek in Sounds, Video, and Game Controllers.
Do they show installed without problems?

Check those, after reinstalling the chipset and let me know.
