    Hi,

I have a network with 3 pc's. Until yesterday they were all vista. One is a laptop which I had to replace with a Windows 7 machine. Now I can't print from the laptop.

The printer is a Samsung ML-2010. I have installed the latest drivers on the new computor and updated the drivers on the server. The printer appears to install alright but will not print the test page. I also tried printing from a works document. Nothing ever shows up in the queue.

I tried installing as a network printer and as a local printer using the network address for location.

I am about to pull my hair out. Can you please help? I don't think bald will be a good look for me.

The laptop is wireless..the others are wired to the router.

    Thanks,
    Wormwood

Ok first I have to ask, is the printer connected to the network with an IP address or is it connected to a computer and shared? Printers can be installed locally with IP without the printer attached. Attaching the printer can come later. Does the printer icon in the Printers menu show (Ready). Or does in say something like (offline)? You said you tried installing it as local using the network address. I suppose you then tried it as an IP address using Standard TCP/IP wizard. Then I really need to know what the connection state says about the printer in your printer window first. Have to installed this printer on the server as a local TCP/IP printer? And then are you sharing it?

It is connected and shared from the vista computor. Did not use IP address. Just computer name. The printer icon does show ready. I'm not sure how to install as tcp/ip printer.

    Hi

Give the Add Printer Wizard in Windows 7 a go, may just work for you, click Start > Devices and Printers > Add Printer and then choose Network and see if it picks the printer off the network, if not click the box "the printer I want is not listed" then enter the \\PCNAME etc (may actually be able to browse for it)

Thanks Halo, but I've done that at least 20 times. It sees the printer and installs it.....everything looks good but it won't print.

    Hi

Ok, now try the other tack and make sure that in Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings that Network Discovery and File and Printer sharing is on.

Then try the same thing in going to Start > Devices and Printers > Add Printer but this time choose Local printer, create new port > Standard TCP/IP Port > NEXT > then enter the PC name from its network name, //WhatIsMyName etc and in the Port Name just name it the Printers model say HP4830 Network Printer, click Next and follow any prompts.

Says it cannot detect network device.

Well, you dont need a TCP/IP port if you have succesfully connected to the printer through the share. How is the printer connected to your Vista computer? Is it USB? If that is the case, then on your 7 laptop is the icon for the printer indicating that it is a shared printer (On XP the printer icon will have a small bar underneath noting that it is connected to a shared printer on a computer. I dont know what the icon looks like for Windows 7 for shared printers) Anyways, if that is ok, then I would have to go with some kind of driver issue. Is Windows 7 using the same drive Vista uses??? On the properties of the printer on the Advanced tab, you should see the driver for that printer. Does it match? Anyone know if these Vista drivers are compatable with Windows 7?

Ah, also make sure the printer is not paused on your 7 laptop.

Thank you for your help guys...problem solved.

Microsoft had a driver update for the printer. Once installed everything was fine.
