need help with ram

    i had 4 identical pc6400 1gb ram cards in my pc. for some reason its telling me i only have 3325 mb of ram though...shouldnt that # be 4096?

    What OS are you using? Me thinks XP maxes at 3.something, while Vista and some Nix OS's can use more RAM. As Mimsy said, it is the 32 bit vs 64 bit difference. Thanks for clearing that up Mimsy.

    All 32-bit operating systems, Linux, Microsoft, or Apple, have a 4GB limit. However, this is for system memory, which is not he same as the amount of RAM you have physically installed. If that is the case with your system, the BIOS will report 4GB, the System Preferences will report somewhere between 3.0GB and 3.5GB--in your case 3.325GB. It's not a matter of malfunctioning memory, it's a limitation built into 32-bit operating systems.

    If you can post your exact operating system name and version, that would help us determine if the 32-bit limit is what is happening here.

    its vista x64ultimate, and i figured it out...

    4096
    -256
    -512
    3328

    it's my L1 and L2 cahces which also tells ya that Vista's Ram cap is still 4G
