I have just recovered from a nasty virus attack that changed several settings, including hijacked browser pages, favorites, desktop icons, etc. The only thing I cannot change back is the desktop tab in Display Settings. I can't seem to change the wallpaper. The browse and apply settings are greyed out. Checked in gpedit.msc and nothing is active. No web settings, etc. Only affects one user, so it must be somewhere in HKEY_Current_User, but I can't find anything unusual. Running WinXP Pro. Scanned with PC-Cillin, Spy-bot SD, Spyware Doctor, et al and there is no sign of infection, only this one setting. :(

    Hey Cjamesstuart,
You should post this message in the spyware forum. There has been quite a few cases of desktop problems related to malware lately. They have a fix for it. Good Luck :)

Problem solved!! If anyone else experiences this problem, go to regedit, and find HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System and if there is a D_Word entry called "Wallpaper" with no value set, delete it.
