i've finally changed from win98 to win2k but the sound card driver needs to be installed. i've downloaded loads of ess drives and unzipped em but i can't figure a way for the comp to accept it. acc to me my driver is ess1887 and im sure ive downloaded some of 1887s too but i can't figure out how to install it. NEED HELP DESPERATELY. HATE THIS SILENCE.

At ESS's website, under Audio ISA AudioDriveā„¢ they list the drivers for W2K as coming off the W2K install CD.. see Note:
    http://www.esstech.com/techsupp/drivers.shtm#combo

However they have in the Note: listed the W2k Drivers for you to download.. worth trying those.

Other that that what is the makers name ( eg. Creative ) of your soundcard ( not the sound chip as in ES1887 ) or motherboard if its onboard sound as they may have a W2k Driver if that one above doesnt work?

Try this route, and I do hope I have it right as its a long time since I used w2k, but I'm sure the device setup is the same as XP,

Goto Device Manager and no doubt you'll have a yellow ! mark by the Audio Driver, right click it and choose Properties > Driver > Update Driver and at this point choose "No not at this Time" > Next > Choose Install from Specific location ( advanced ) > Next > only have checked "dont search I will choose driver to install" > Next > click Have Disk > then Browse for the location of the file/folder you downloaded click it and 1 or two files should show up, these are setup files > choose the wdma_ess one > click Open > OK > Next to install the driver.

hopefully these ones are compatible with your card and w2k... they should be and looking in the setup.inf file your 1887 chip is mentioned.
