Windows Updates? If it is, it should settle down very soon, hopefully just rebooting monthly.

have you looked into msconfig from the run off of start?

    general tab > normal startup

    boot.ini tab > uncheck /safeboot

check in the system configuration utility for any safe mode boot changes for the system to start up...

type 'msconfig' in run will bring up the 'system configuration utility'
    - - has several tabs like any other dialog box
-----General tab has a radial button for Normal, Diagostic, and Selective bootup
    >>>>>>>General tab is normal highlighted with Normal bootup selected
-----Boot.ini tab has several check boxes, also shows the boot.ini file entries
    >>>>>>>normally the '/SAFEBOOT' is not ticked/checked

it is a suggestion to verify these two settings.

In Windows7 you can set the pc to tell you when updates are available and when to install them

    Click "start"
    click "control panel"
    click "windows update"

When the screen appears on the left side are some options click "change settings" when in there it will give you options when to install them.

Mine is set to "notify me of updates but let me choose when to install them"

I then usually install any that i want at the end of the day just before shutting down the PC.

Windows includes an automatic updater. It automatically restarts after it downloads & installs an update. After a few weeks this should subside. But, you can do what Bill said above.
