My friend had someone clean up her computer for her and they deleted the dial-up icon from off her desktop. Is there a quick and easy way to get it back?
BTW- this is an old pc with 98 as original op system. She lives in a rural area and can't get anything but dial-up.

They did her a favor by deleting that if you ask me.

Windows 98 isn't even supported thus if she plans to get online again chances are that computer will need to cleaned out again.

    Upgrade that computer.

who is her internet service provider ?? did she get any install discs when she set up her internet connection, if so i would advise in installing that software again and that should replace the missing icon on her desktop.

as the other poster has said .... Win 98 is no longer supported by MS and strongly suggests upgrading the OS .... it is a true fact... but there are a lot of people who prefer to stick to what they are used to,and if she is not using the internet alot and is properly protected with firewall and av and anti malware, i can't see there been any major issues to be had.

Thanks! I will start with that. Honestly, she is older and only gets on the internet to check her email, so for her upgrading, I don't think that is a big issue right now. I will check to see if she had install disks. I didn't even think of that!

Perhaps it was just a shortcut icon and the settings are still there?
Take a look under Start<All Programs and look for her dialup provider first and failing that maybe Networking. (It has been quite a while since Win98 so I am unsure.)

If you can find a program with an icon she recognizes and it connects her to the net then you could right-click the icon in All Programs and select Send To Desktop to create a new shortcut.

Windows 98 doesn't have an "All Programs" in the "Start" menu ;)

try looking under programs and then something like system resources or something on those lines. It should be there or somewhere in the programs menu.

Hi guys, I got it figured out! She brought the pc to me and then finally told me it wasn't on the desktop, but in the section that is brought up when you click on the computer. It was called dial-up connection. I searched through a bunch of places and tried to reinstall those setting and it kept telling me it couldn't be found. Finally I found one that said internet connection wizard and clicked on it and it worked! Hallelujah, it even had all the settings saved and it installed the folder back! Yeah! Thank you all for all the ideas!

Thanks for the info mcsmc. :)

    Edit: Nice work lisa! :)

Glad you got it fixed before I sent you on a wild goose chase through Control Panel looking for networking/connections.:-o

The "All Programs" feature didn't appear until Vista/7. Even Windows XP didn't have "All Programs".

I'm starting to feel old realizing that I remember when DOS 3.0 was out, 16 color monitors were a luxury, mice weren't around yet, and Windows 3.1 was revolutionary.

Don't take investment advice from me...I hated Windows because it introduced the mouse which always annoyed me because you had to stop typing to grab it. I never thought it would catch on.

And of course a 1600 baud modem was overkill because you could never read a screen that fast. 300 baud was just about right. rolleyes

Oh wait, I was just ahead of my time on the mouse...http://www.telappliant.com/voip-news/18690066/new-gadgets-to-phase-out-mouse. :-D

Don't take investment advice from me either. I bought my first computer, an IBM without windows because I didn't think it would last! roflmao
Eventually I wised up and got Windows 3.11 on my 2nd computer.

I have to agree with the mouse issue. I hated it. No point to it. Then got one, quickly went to trackball (far superior). Now, I'm back to mice, was using a G9x laser mouse, now using a razer mamba. Love it since I can switch from wireless to wired. Though, it took awhile to get use to the switch. The logitech is heavier, which I prefer. Now, I'm use to the mamba. Eventually, I'll switch back to the logitech, when this mouse dies.

I started using the logitech back in 03, and I've never went back. I love those things. Hopefully they will never get rid of them.
