Need help with Windows XP Pro activation

I bought a used computer loaded with Windows XP Pro and all of a sudden it wants an activation code. No disk came with it. The person I bought it from is trying to help but has been unsuccessful. I did call Microsoft but when I got an actual person, they couldn't hear me! This happened twice! The computer now won't work because Windows won't activate. Can someone please help me? I need advice. Thanks so much!

I've called Microsoft many, many times in the past to activate and every so often, there's a communication problem or I get routed to tech support or some craziness... the activation people are in India, so the occasional bad connection is understandable. All I can really suggest is to try calling them again on a different phone. If you boot in Safe Mode and log in as Administrator, you can run a product key extraction tool (like ProduKey or KeyFinderThingy) so you can have the product key if the activation people need it...... good luck!
