need help with xp issues....

I have been told i need to do this...'If you have your xp cd, go to start / run / type "sfc /scannow" without qoutes and note the space between the c and the /

Let it run twice.'
But i dont actually have my xp disc, anything you can do to help?

 

I have just been through this with TimW i could try to get hold of one in the next few days......how much would it cost to purchase one?

There is something you can do, but its not a complete backup scan. If your running XP SP2, get a hold of the SP2 download if you don't already have it or SP3 if you have that installed. If you have the EXE file you will have to extract it but If you have the big Iso you can just mount it into a virtual drive like Daemon tools. When you run scannow point it to the i386 folder which will have alot of the files in it that scannow needs anyway. Its almost identical to the i386 folder on the disk. If you run across anything it can't find after a few retry's just skip that one.

Now lets see about that SP extraction:
These instructions are for sp2 so you would need to change a few things if you do SP3, it assumes you create a folder called XPSP2 (XPSP3) directly under the C drive and put the downloaded sp2/sp3 exe file in it.

Obtaining Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Necessary Security Updates 

Create a folder C:\XPSP2

Go to the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers site, and download the XP Service Pack file. The current version is called WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe.

Once the download is complete, move the file (WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe) into the C:\XPSP2 folder you created on the base system earlier. 

Extracting the Service Packs and Security Updates 

Once the base Windows XP and Service Pack 2 files are in the directories you've created, it's time to extract the files from the service pack. 

First, open a command prompt by going to Start > Run and typing cmd. Then click OK. Once the command prompt opens, navigate to the C: drive by typing: cd\

Then navigate to the XPSP2 directory by typing: cd \XPSP2 

Next, type the name of the service pack, followed by -x to extract it. For our example, type the following and hit return: WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe –x 

The file will extract itself, and created a folder called I386 in your C:\XPSP2 folder. type exit and hit enter to get out of the command prompt when its finished.

I took this and modified it for you from a slipstreaming tuorial but removed the parts about integrating the SP into your files since your not doing that. Once you have the i386 folder you can point to it when you do you scannow. You have to use the same SP that is installed on your system which you can find at START > CONTROL PANEL > SYSTEM and look to see which service pack is listed.

 

Wow! tough stuff lol. I do know that something is partitioned, something like xp, im not quite sure, was something my ex said, i remember someone saying about the disc not being with pc, n he said it was ok because of partitioning?.

I have googled, searched ebay, but too many different items came up, i searched for windows xp cd, windows xp replacement cd, but the results were confusing for me.

 

Thanks for the erm.. help guys, but i didnt need to do any of the things mentioned because i have HP, theres an easier way to do it all, im well on my way to sorting things (i hope) but thanks anyway.
