Hi I need help? What are the best free anti virus, malware and spyware sites to use? I am just learning the computer and on a real limited old age budget. Or what should I get to get the best protection for my computer its a xp. Thanks Sharon

Hi. Moved your thread into software as you were asking general questions about how to protect your machine. :)

    My set up:

    Anti-Virus:
    Avast Home Edition

    Firewall:
    PC Tools

    Anti-Spyware:
    Malware Bytes anti-malware

    SUPERantispyware

This is a good link to take a look over:

Others will suggest different antivirus/firewalls/anti-spyware. Malware Bytes and SUPERantispyware offer real time protection if you purchase them. I just use the free versions though.

It's all about what you feel comfortable with. But I would not advise you to use the security "suites" such as Norton and Mcafee as they are resource hungry and the "layered" approach is a much better way to go.

Hey granny, i couldn't agree more with kestrel's advice on avoiding Mcafee & Norton, They are worse than useless in some aspects imo.

Anyhoo, for a free AV i would have to recommend Avira, it's detection rates are always up there with the best.

    Avira

Although i do recommend giving kasperskys free 30 day trial a go and consider purchasing it, as it is THE best AV imo, and the one i use, i used to use Kaspersky internet security suite but it has became a bit of a bloated mess so i just use the AV now [Kaspersky is rivalled only by NOD32 as far as im concerned :p]

For a free firewall, it has got to be comodo imo, although that is based mostly on the gui, as ther are many firewalls that are just as secure :)

    Comodo

Malware bytes anti malware & Spybot seach and destroy are the two general Anti-malware scanners i would recommend
[except Kaspersky users cant have spybot installed]
