I'm getting a similar issue... Prior to installing NVidia's GeForce FX5700 VE, I had 3D Acceleration... I need this to run Worlds of Warcraft... However, since I've installed, it no longer works and crashes immediately. Going into DXDIAG, I get similar errors:

    System Info:

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600)
    System Manufacturer: Gateway
    System Model: 0AAVWP02
BIOS: AMIBIOS (C) 1999 American Megatrends, Inc. Version 07.00.xx
    Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) Processor, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.1GHz
    Memory: 256MB RAM
Page file: 277MB used, 340MB available
    DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

When I go into the display tab, DirectDRAW & Direct3D Acceleration are both enabled, but the AGP Texture Acceleration is showing 'Not Available'. I tested DirectDraw, and the test was successful. However, the Direct3D Acceleration test failed with the following errors:

D3D7 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x887602eb (error code)
D3D8 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)
D3D9 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)

I tried other message boards, and some suggested disabling and re-enabling the Direct3D Acceleration. When I tried that, I see the following message:

Hardware accelerated Direct3D 9+ is not available because the display driver does not support it. You may be able to get a newer driver from the hardware manufacturer.

I've tried all the newsboards and checked microsoft support, and am unable to find anything either. I'll be checking these posts to see if anyone has any ideas. I've already tried reinstalling the newest drivers, etc, but nothing works. If anyone out there can help, I hope they don't charge me $150 minimum that all the support folks are charging these days!

I had the exact same problem. It started when I updated my nvidia drivers! I ultimately removed my updated drivers (version 84.21) and reinstalled version 71.84 (available at the nvidia website) and everything returned to normal.
