Need info for installing Xp upgrade from 98 on old machine

Hi,
I have recently been working on my brother and sister in laws computer. It is several years old. A Compaq Pentium 3 with 256 megs of ram. It was a total mess. I had to go in Dos and restore the regestry and then reinstall the USB ports. I am now trying to upgrade it to XP Pro. When I started the upgrade, it stopped and gave thefollowing warnings:

mouseware is incompatable:confused

Is all of this necessary software? A lot of it I'm not familar with. My computers have been Gateways or self built by a cousin. They have cable broadband so I'm not sure they even need the dial up modem at this point. Unless they change in future. I want to make sure that when I do the install I don't disable anything vital. Thanks for any help you can give me on this.

 

Please list the make and model number of the pc so we can look and see what you are getting into. ed

 

Hi, Thanks for the reply. It took me awile to get the info. from my sister-in-law (they work crazy hours).

It is a Compaq 5800 Series
And the book says it came with a 1.5MBMAXDigitalDSL56K Modem
And a 56K ITUV.90Standard Modem

It was upgraded last year but I think they just added memory. That's all I know until I go back to their house, which I'm doing tomorrow sometime. Then I can check it more myself.
