I am in need of a manual (or any information) for a friend's laptop that was given to him without a manual. The unit is from MAG Portables and is a model 8530CDT. Microsoft Windows 98 (installed) System Info shows an INTEL Pentium II with 64 MB RAM with a 4 GB drive. I believe the year of manufacture must be about 1998-1999. It appears to have a Toshiba CD-ROM XM-1802B installed. I have tried the company website (my first choice) but they have apparently sold or released the domain name (www.magportables.com) to a search site (I hate when this happens).

Does anyone know if this company still exists and if they have a website running? Any info would be greatly appreciated (I have never heard of the manufacturer before).

These were built to order from what I'm seeing. 300MHz Celeron Processor, 15.0" Active Matrix display XGA 1024 x 768, 128kb of level 2 cache, 64MB RAM, 4.3GB HD, ESS Maestro-2 PCI audio chip with software wavooks include one Type III or two Type II PC Carion monitor, projector, or VCR; a fast IrDA-compatible infrared port A transmitter/receiver for infrared signals, a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port, high-speed serial and parallel ports, a PS/2-style keyboard/mouse port.

Next I went to the way back machine which keeps an archive of old webpages and typed in www.magportables.com but I got this
I'm almost sure those numbers won't work.
You may be able to see if they have any information here
http://www.kdscomputers.com/ I'm not sure if kds is involved with computers any more. The kds site doesn't seem to have anything and the kdscomputers just seems like it is a bunch of links.

I went to the way back machine again and found the kdscomputer pages
    http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://kdscomputers.com
The first one I looked at from Feb. 29, 2000 has the same 800 number posted above. The site still looked good in 2004 but by 2005, it had changed to merely a page of referral links. I think you'll hit a dead end.

What you can do, is download Belarc http://www.majorgeeks.com/Belarc_Advisor_d1385.html
and see what it says about the computer.
I'd also get a program that backs up drivers. Something from here
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads28.html and copy the drivers to a flash drive and/or burn them to a CD so you don't have to hunt if something happens to the computer.

You can also post at quite a few forums and ask if anyone has a MAGportable and wants to email you the manual (converting it to pdf).

Someone also posted this in 2003

Many thanks, PLODR. This is useful information. If I were able to get the MAG connected to the net, I think things would be a touch easier. I will endeavour to do that first.

You don't need to be able to connect a computer to the internet to run Belarc.
Download it to any computer then move it to the MAG portable (flash drive if the MAG has USB ports; if not use floppies or burn it to a CD) and run it. You'll at least be able to get information about the system.
