ok first thing i guess, files i have deleted are not really gone right, so how can i permanitly delete them for good, as in gone, all traces, bye bye gone!

next, i cant do any updates for my windos, says something about a validation error or something, i seached and found nothing other than a recomendation to take it back to the seller, well they are no longer in buisness, anythign i can do? its xp profesional edition. i did manage to get rid of al my annoying pop ups from ie though so that is a good thing, im using eset nod 32 for virus software and it seems to work awesome! and ive run adaware and hijackthis a few tiems as well., thanks

Go to msconfig, from start, run, and then click on the services tab.

There is a little checkbox just above the OK button that says Hide All Microsoft Services.

Put a check in it. Then look at the services you have left. Do you have one called Reset, or Reset5?

ok, i just tried and this is what it is telling me,

the product key that was used to install windows may not be valid. for more information about why you may have recieved this error and steps you can take to resolve this issue visit www.howtotell.com

does that make any sense to you? one thing though when i got the computer i did not get a copy of windows or any disks or anything??

Your product key is blacklisted. Call Microsoft for further support on this issue. Nothing anyone here can do to help you.

If the same XP disc has been used to install onto more that one system...then the other will be disabled!!

Another words...no borrowing XP from a friend to install on your computer!!!

Actually, no, once its been activated, then its never checked again. MS has no way to know whether its been activated on more than one system. Only blacklisted keys and hacked activations have this problem.

Simply put the serial key used to install your Xp Pro is one that was never released by Microsoft thus you are recieving that validation message, some options are on the validation error page you recieved, call MS and have proof your version in legal, buy a licence for a reduced price or do nothing.

what it means is you will not be able to get any further MS updates or certain downloads... you will still be able to get security only updates if you have automatic update enabled.

I'm a bit confused at some of the replies here.

I'm no expert on Product Activation, but I thought that it "tied" the Windows Product Key to your hardware assortment. ie every piece of hardware has an electronically identifying number or serial number, which is then mathematically hashed with the product key to give you "Product Activation".

If you try to use the same key on a different machine, or change a certain number of items, then you will have to activate it again.

If my understanding of this is wrong, someone please correct me as I'm curious.

    Thanks.

BTW, if anyone has purchased a "dodgy" copy of Windows and has a receipt, then Micro$$oft in some countries will replace it with a genuine copy.

you are correct insomniac, but certain keys, namely VLKs or more accuratly generated VLKs dont need activating and its mostly these that are being checked/validated

    Hi and thanks Halo.

I wanted to depict a scenario where the above would be unworkable, but doing so would outline a way of bypassing Product Activation, so I'll leave it at that.

    Thanks again.
