Are you using a router or just connecting to the cable modem?

What brand and model Cable Modem?

If you are directly connected to the modem are you using USB or ethernet?

Does the device manager indicate any problems?

i am connected using road runner
device manager says everything is ok except for some audio thing

that file that i had deleted before isnt coming up though
could that be an issue? "microsoft system management BIOS driver"
    i cant find it online

when i right click on my network connections to repair it
it says repair operation failed: renewing the ip address

Don't repair the connection, use ipconfig /renew.

Do it from a cmd prompt. Post any error received, word for word.

In General, you can debug the Network Settings of a computer by following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer’s Device Manager. Make sure that the Network Card drivers are installed correctly; i.e. there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

Step Two. Verify Basic network setting in the OS: http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet

If need to Reinstall; Log to this page it have a lot of links to instructions for Windows Network Installation -http://www.ezlan.net/Installing.html

    :)

P.S. It seems like a lot of work, but it faster then sensless Trial and Error.

I have a somewhat similar issue and can't seem to get it fixed. Last night I updated my ZoneAlarm to the most current version. I also ran a "UPnPTest.exe" near the same time. (I know, never change more than one thing on your computer at the same time..) After undoing the changes I had made from the test, and rebooting to complete the update for ZA, ZA opened with "System Error: Please reboot" at the top of the control panel for ZA. I rebooted several times with no change. I then uninstalled ZA, made sure the changes I made to the 'services' panel remained in their original positions, and rebooted. I also have a wireless network at home, and I connect to the internet through a wireless nic on my desktop - it's a Lynksys 2.4ghz card, with speedboost, connected to a wiresless Lynksys router/hub. The rest of the computers on the network can see each other and connect to the internet. Mine can not see any of the other computers or the internet. I have uninstalled the nic, shutdown (for hours) and then reinstalled the nic with the most current drivers. I still cannot see the rest of the networked computers, nor can they see me, and I still cannot access the internet either. I have also tried windows repair for the connection as well as manually release/renew of the ip in the command prompt. I have Windows Xp Home Sp 2 machine on a P4, 768mb RAM ... and I just blanked on any other information that might be helpful. *sighs* The house is connected to the internet through BellSouth DSL.

Well, I'm not quite sure what I've done now... However, I have the internet back! *Yay!* Except, I still don't see the other computers on the network..

I reinstalled the old version of Zone Alarm, and then had to uninstall it in safe mode. Not sure what exactly fixed the internet problem, but something did. I'm going to try to install the new version of ZA now and hope it installs correctly with the 'system error' that it's been having. Wish me luck! *crosses fingers*

*cheers* The Internet Gods are being kind to me!

I just installed the newest version of ZoneAlarm and the internet still works. I still can't see the network, and the network can't see me, however I'm not nearly as concerned about that as I was being able to reach the internet.. *g*

If you have any suggestions for fixing the network problem, drop me a line.
    Thank you!

In Zone Alarm you need to define an IP range or specific IP address's that you want to allow to access your computer.

Open ZA and go to Firewall on the left and go to Zones near the top on the right. The easiest way to set it up is to open an IP Range. Near the bottom on the right is a button that says Add>> click that and go to IP Range and add the same range that DHCP server in your router is assigning for addresses

If you dont know what they are go to Start> Run> cmd and enter and type ipconfig and enter the address range that would cover both of your computers. For example. 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.120
