Anyone have any suggestions on a good firewall to download or buy? I want to get rid of my Zone Alarm because of the bug problem.

Sygate if you want software (available free and pay).

LinkSys or D-Link if you want Hardware.

This bug was tested on ZA ( free ) version 3.1.395 considering its now at 3.7 and or PRO maybe the tester needs to try it with that version to see if it still exists PLUS this exploit seems to stem from users own failings in letting in Spyware/Malware onto their systems in the first place... if some of these trojans are on your system you are screwed in any case whichever software firewall you are using.

So good Idea to run Ad-Aware/SpyBot S&D as well as your AV

as well as da chickens great options here are a few more to look at.....

Kerio is a fine free firewall

Netgear for Modem/Routers with built in firewalls.

incidentally, its completley out of your choice what you pick, no matter what anyone else says!

Personally i agree the sygate and kerio are excelent firewalls, in conjunction with a router they are brilliant.

I like Sygate for the application intergration, if a program changes (updates, etc,) sygate will not allow a connection without user interferance. Something that is not possible with Mcafee. An interseting side note Mcafee is also very rude on a network. It's like reinventing the wheel to get a reliable connection, Sygate is much better IMHO

I have Zone Alarm 3.7 and its not free. Should I keep it? I'd like to get the best firewall software out there.

I use Kerio and have done so for at least 12 months. I hated ZA.
I also use Norton AVG plus Spybot which has kept me trouble free. The free AVG is as good as Norton I am told but in my salad days I paid for Norton and will stick with it. But Kerio is great
    Cheers

Granted the XP built in one only stops Incomming data BUT its a starting point as Firewalls go.

The Bug MT is this one http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/55/31481.html

But as I said in my post above you will have needed to have been fool enough to allow Spyware or Malware and/or a Trojan onto your system to allow this vunerabilty to manifest itself.

unless you frequently pop a URL into the address bar if using windows explorer. In this case, it will access the net.

Woooo..... I never said you did, all I said was its a starting point as Firewalls go..... and that it will not stop packets of data leaving your PC where as ZA & Kerio will.

I'm with you on this alledged BUG... MT as it will only manifest itself if you allow spyware or a trojan on your system.
