Background: My computer shut down due to a thermal event. I guess the CPU got too hot and so automatically shut down. So it sits for a bit and I turn it on and all my desktop shortcuts are now .lnk files instead of .exe. Wonderful. I go and I run a reg file that fixes the problem, sorta. I have all my icons back (cuz they change) but now everything I click on says "access denied." I am logged in as administrator (Win xp) and theres no other users. I cant get into accounts to check it out cuz i get access denied on EVERYTHING. I think this is registry related however I have been able to run registry mechanic with no results.

Can anybody shed light on here? I rather not reload windows. Thnx in advance.

Best suggestion would be a restore before the thermal event ....and some extra cooling!!!

Yeah I tried to restore, didnt do anything.

I used some posts from here and restored some files from the registry and its now working. I did alot at one time so I couldnt narrow it down.
