Hi. I have read many many posts on this, but I am STUCK.

I have a new sata hard drive for my windows xp desktop. The computer doesn't see the disk when I attempt installation "unknown disk" and I can't do anything.

From what I've been reading, I need sata drivers to be integrated into my xp cd.....ok, so I d/l nlite, I have my original xp cd, I even have a sp3 to integrate in as well...but I cannot find these drivers anywhere??

my processor is: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+

but I don't even know if that is the right info you need to help me get the correct drivers.

I have also gone into bios and disabled the only thing I could disable regarding sata, which was system config> sate ide > disabled

    didn't help.

anyone know where I can find what I need? I'm close to crying. :cry

I've had to do this a few times. But it has been with Dell & HP. So I would just go to their websites and download drivers from there. Not sure for you. Hmmm.

yeah, I went to the amd website...the problem is it starts asking me what the product line is, model, component needed ( i need a sata driver, but it's not listed ) before it will even give me a list of available downloads and as for the model etc, I do not know because this computer is at least 6 years old and all stickers on tower have since fallen off, been removed...I have no clue.

all i know is, when i plug in a stupid hard drive, stupid computer should know it's there :(

    thanks anyway

Have you plugged it into a computer you know is working. As a slave?

Does it make any sound that it is spinning up? Just want to rule out that this is a working drive.

lets see on devise manages is the sata controller loaded okay??
your previous hard drive is also on sata or eide??
cause if it is on sata that means you have already loaded the sata drivers
new hard drives are unformated so go disk mangment to prepare the driver and format it.
by the way xp will have problems with hard driver over 2 tera

the computer is an asus...just now figured that out....i'm not stupid but well :-D

it previously had both an ide and sata installed...

the sata hard drive is not recognized in bios either...

the hard drive is a western digital green 500gb...about 250 over what it used to have, but hey, it was on sale..

the hard drive was previously not making any noise, but when i went in to mess with it again just now, it seems to periodically click..

i can't go into disk management because there is no OS on the desktop i'm installing it on...

i will probably return it rather than check to see if it actually works as a slave on my other computer.....because i'm scared half to death of ruining my 'good' computer

do you think western digital diagnostics that supposedly tell if the hard drive is bad actually works? i am tempted to try it, but i don't want to cause any more damage to the hard drive...not that i've done anything to it, except try to start windows installation 5000x.

think i covered eveything...ps, my friend told me i should just go and buy a sata card reader which comes preinstalled with the drivers...problem solved.

    think that will work?

    thanks for the feedback, ya'll

    1. Well if it doesn't spin up and randomly clicks. That isn't a very good sign for your drive. Sounds dead to me.

    2. Slaving it won't ruin anything. A bad drive is not infections. :-D

:-D I know it's not infectious, it's just that my problems started with taking an old drive out of one computer and putting it into the computer I'm currently trying to fix to get stuff off from it.

Ever since I did that, the computer I'm trying to fix has not been running right....tests done it said that the hard drive was dead....not the hard drive I installed as slave, mind you...I got what I needed off that and it is no longer installed.

This is the 3rd time I've purchased a sata drive for it trying to get it running again. It NEVER recognizes the drive.

Anyway, I have a brand spankin new computer at home and no way am I messing with its innards. ;)

ps, i'm just trying to get this other computer working because 1. sentimental reasons..it was given to me by my father who has passed away and 2. my kid needs a computer

    bye for now
