    Hi all,

I'm running Win98SE. There are times when the hour glass pops on and there's modem activity (cable modem) but I'm not sending or receiving. I'm looking for software which allows me to monitor what my computer is doing, where it's sending what, or what outside source is trying to contact the machine. I have Norton's running and just recently added Ad-Aware SE.

    Appreciate your input.

Netstat Viewer may give you the info needed

some of the time even if you are idle ( not using ) the net... small packets of data are sent from either your ISP or reciently visited www sites to just say hey are you still here!

if you are worried about outside or anything inside your PC sending data without you knowing then a software Firewall is a good option.

    Zone Alarm
    Sygate
    Kerio
    Outpost

Or you can use a good firewall, such as sygate.

As you can see in my pic, it shows exactly whats accesing the net, how much data it has sent, how much its sending, how much it has recieved etc. It also logs everything that acceses the net. It also wont let anything connect without you okaying it first.

Thank you all for your input and advice.

I'm not able to utilise Active POrts since I'm running Win98SE but I did d/l and install sygate. To my delight it perked right up and told me IE was trying to connect. I despise IE and it was with great satisfaction that I told sygate to squash that activity.

Not that I understand everything the firewall is telling me or its functionality but then again, I once was a DOS dummy, too, and here I am, graduated all the way to Win98 :)

    Thanks again.

Good to hear, you dont need to understand all of it, the important bit is that you now know 100% what is accessing the net, and you can have a look to see whats sending the most data, whats receiveing the most etc.

Any confusion you can just post here.
