I want to upgrade my old nvidia 5200 graphics card...I have a :
    2.4 pentium 4
1 GB of 3200 ddr ram
    80 GB hard drive
    windows xp sp2

I looking at getting either the ATI X800PR0 or the Nvidia 6800 series...but i want to know if i have enough processing chip power for these cards? And if, so which of these cards would be good for gaming.

    Thanks.

This is a very common question, look thur this Forum and the Game section. Info from on your MOBO would help to determine if were talking AGP (mostlikely) or PCI (or PCI-E). What you're willing to spend would be another question.

If your not sure you can download something like Everest and it will tell you have your system has. http://www.majorgeeks.com/EVEREST_Home_Edition_d4181.html

Since your needs are not specific or specialized, it basically depends on your budget.
If you got $250, then get the best $250 card you can get your hands on, if you got $500 then get the ebst $500 card. In terms of brans, it depends on who you like... do you like mercedez or a BMW?

enough chip power is a tricky question, yes you will have enough chip to use the cards, will you be getting the most from them from to make them worth buying IMHO, No ,your system will be very CPU limited,it will be a vast improvement over your 5200,I think a radeon 9800,or nvidia 6600 would be a much wiser purchase and only the 128mb cards

yah that's what I was saying I thought agp would be a bigger difference in price than ten dollars, but oh well thanks for clearing that up.

At Best Buy this week, the X850 Pro (AGP) is $249 after rebates.

you also might want to see if your power supply can handle a high end gfx card. i had to get a new psu when i got my Radeon AIW 9800 Pro. my old psu was 300w but the system would crash if i did anything graphical so i bought a 520w Aspire psu and it works great. but yea.
