my friend just upgraded his hardware to an Abit A-17 MB with a 2.8 ghz processor plus a radeon 9600 SE vid card running with win ME (i know i know)... problem is the video drivers will not install at all, goes through the install shield and then exits out of the install process. Was having problems with a MFC42.dll error but got that taken care of. Any ideas on what the problem is. Help!

his old card was from Diamond which I believe went out completely. All the old drivers were deleted but not using a driver cleaner. When I first tried to install the driver it gave an error saying to run setup with a VGA display driver which it was already in so that confused me there... thx for all the help

not sure of the settings in me but make sure your video adapter is set to standard vga
make sure you completely remove any drivers from the old card do a search and delete anything you find
turn off the pc and physically remove the card and reinstall it boot into safe mode and reinstall the drivers from there(tip: make sure you got the set-up file somewhere handy like on your desktop)

    Follow the General's good advice.

Diamond drivers are notoriously hard to remove and highly incompatible with ATI drivers. Even when you're upgrading from one Diamond card to another or one driver version to another they recommend completely uninstalling old drivers 1st and reverting to Standard VGA before doing anything else.

gotten rid of everything diamond related and the adapter is listed as standard VGA but the install still won't happen... could it just be ME that is the problem ??

Found this on Dell's support forum regarding the missing atrace.dll
I suspect you might have some missing system file(s)...

WinME can be a really fussy bitch with drivers. It wants to search it's driver DB or the web. To specify the drivers you have to type in the full exact path during the device setup routine.
