Need some help with my sound

I got a Compaq Presario CQ50-139WM laptop.
I loaded XP SP2 in it and am having problems getting my sound working.
I have installed a couple of drivers that I thought were right but apparently not.
Everest says
Conexant Cx20561 @ Intel 82801IB ICH9 - High Definition Audio Controller [A-3] PCI
When I loaded the driver I found for that here it just brought up some more unknown items that dont have drivers now.
Any info would be appreciated. HP doesnt have xp drivers for this computer so the whole setup has been a challenge and driving me crazy from slipstreaming the sata drivers in to going through 18 different drivers for the wireless till I found the right one and then reloading again to get rid of all of them so it could actually connect. LOL

 

Nobody has any advice? I really need to get this sound going.. thanks if anyone decides to take time to help.

I ran into much the same problem with a desktop, going from Vista to XP . . . the audio driver was a problem, as was the network driver. Took some searching and try-out of several driver versions, but I finally got the thing squared away.

Heres what it was.
When I went to device manager and clicked on the sound card and clicked update driver I then let it search.. that didnt work. Then I chose the folder where I extracted the drivers and that didnt work either.. what I ended up doing was choosing have disk and it popped up with the driver that I had installed hours before as a compatible driver.
