Hello! For the past couple of days, whenever I play any game through STEAM my computer ends up crashing. When I look in the event viewer, I get a critical error that says a "fatal hardware error has occurred."

    Component: AMD NORTHBRIDGE
    Error Source Machine Check Exception
Error Type HyperTransport Watchdog Timeout Error
    Processor APIC ID: 0

I've been able to rule out my gpu, so I'm thinking maybe the motherboard or cpu? Anyone know how I can find out exactly what's causing the problem so I can replace it? I'm using windows 8 in a custom built pc.

    Thanks

    HI

Not overclocking the CPU are you at all?
Is it only playing games that you get this error and in normal usage (surfing the net etc) your PC is fine?

I'm thinking as Steam games can be a bit taxing on a PC, that your temps maybe getting a little high, so do make sure your PC is clean inside and free from dust, especially the CPU fan.

Then check temps of your PC and try SpeedFan to monitor temps and in the Monitor tab and Configure you can enable logging of temps, so you can play a game or two and see what the temps are, just let us know what the MAX temps are for CPU, GPU etc

Hi! Nope, not overclocking, and yeah, I only get the crash when I play games. At first I thought it must be my graphics card, but I replaced it with an older one and managed to get the same problem.

The odd thing is that it just started doing this. I've played on Steam without any problems for almost a year with that computer, so I'm wondering it something is starting to fail.

    I'll download speedfan now.

Well, it looks like I solved the issue. The crashing had something to do with Steam and all the mod files I downloaded for Left for Dead 2. I deleted most of them and haven't had any problems since.
