Hey all. I just moved into my apartment at school, and I'm trying to work on my Internet connection. The apartment complex covers utilities, including Internet, but said that if I wanted to be connected I had to go pick up a router first. Not having 60 dollars readily available, I wanted to try my Linksys wireless modem, which I've used at home for about 2 years.

    So, here are my questions:

    1) Does the Motorola SB5100 router, which my buddy has, support wireless?

    2) If it does, how can I set it up?

    3) If these two things above fail, what's a really cheap router I can get that'll get me through the school year?

    Thanks again.

Number one is a Modem, not a Router, so the answer is at the beginning of this reply.

As for number 3, do you need a router, or can you get by plugging into the modem, until you can afford the money to purchase one.

Oh, alright, sorry, I was mixed up. My buddy has been here at this apartment for a year already, and the complex gave him his modem, and told me that if we both wanted to be on the Internet, that we had to get a router. He has the modem in his room, and I can't connect to it as he's using the only ethernet jack. If the Motorola SB5100 is just a modem, I guess my question becomes what cheap options are available for routers? I can get by, so it's not a huge deal, but I will want the convenience of being able to access the Internet from my own room. Thanks for the help.

Is wireless necessary? If not get a cheap 5 port switch and connect it to the modem and then wire both of your machines to it. Newegg.com has them from $10 - $45.

Wireless might be necessary. The rooms are adjacent, but the way the apartment is set up, the desks are welded to the wall, and the doors swing open into the rooms, which makes it very inconvenient to set the computers on the side of the desk closest to the door. Also, there's really no holes through the walls, and I don't think I should just take a cordless drill to them to create one. As it is, a 30 foot ethernet cable might be able to connect one of the computers to the router in the other room, but neither of us have one, whereas I already have a wireless Linksys modem. Any thoughts?

Thanks again for the help everyone.

As King Steve has said.......get yourself a wireless router.
