Need some Santa Helpers

I am in need of some tech support for this old decrepit laptop that someone game me. I want to get it running good for my brother's daughter for Christmas. The screen is broke(will hook it up to monitor), outdated drivers, the cd-rom is not showing up. did the windows updates...cleaned it, downloaded ASC 5 for it but it wont do the scans for some reason. Just need a little guidance to make this girls Christmas. She is learning how to play the guitar and wanted the cd-rom working and system running decent. I know its old but I know we can get it running:major

 

Hey,first try this,,Right click "My Computer" click "Properties, select "Hardware tab,then click on "Device Manager. Right click on CD Rom and update drives also try

.If these don't work I would seriously think about formatting and reinstalling Windows. Hope you have success!!!!

 

Thank You Nick, I have windows updated now and no malware. Im trying to get it to run as good as possible. I know I cant expect much outta 256....lol. No cd drive yet.

Try removing the cd drive (it will be held in by a little screw with a circle icon next to it) slide the drive out and then boot the machine so the system does not recognise the drive(even though it does'n't already)Shutdown and replace the drive firmly and secure again with the screw, re-boot and see if it is recognised once more ..... NOTE.... please ensure that the laptop has no power going to it whilst you do this procedure.. also remove the battery and press and hold the power on button for at least 30 seconds!!!

I hope this remedies your issue and your niece has a fully working machine for christmas .

You can pick cd/dvd rom drives up for next to nothing now even external usb ones.
