Got new computer about 6 months. My Vista decided to stop working,,, Have Windows 10. I have messed with my settings and have no sound. Tried windows repair but did not work. Any suggestions how to fix this mess up would be greatly appreciated. Having no problems with the system itself, just no sound.:(

Did you used to have sound with this computer and suddenly it stopped?

What speakers? Are they separate computer speakers or built into your monitor?

The were built into the monitor. I ran a troubleshooter scan that said, located on the back of the computer, audio peripheral doesn't appear to be plugged in. Check the connection. Speaker, heaset or headphone is unplugged. also on my computer in the bottom right had corner there is a speaker with red X beside it.

You didn't answer the most important question. :( Did it used to work?

For speakers integrated with monitors, you typically must use HDMI or DisplayPort connections from the computer.

Yes the speakers are integrated with the monitor and they used to work. I don't know what you mean by HDMI of Display Port connections, but have read this before...while trying to troubleshoot my problem.

Also, I checked your web page on drivers, and they are asking me to install drivers and pay for them. I am not even sure the drivers are the problem so this is not such a good idea....

Update the drivers from Device Manager.

it cost $ to use device manager. I am not sure that updating the drivers will solve the problem.

Who on earth told you that?!
Device Manager is part of Windows.

Monitors typically connect to computers with one of 4 types of connections (cables). (1) DSub or VGA (this is the old analog standard and not used often these days - plus it does not carry audio). (2) DVI - the first major digital cable type, but not used that often any more and also does not carry audio. If using DVI or VGA, you need another cable from the sound ports on the computer to the speakers or monitor. (3) HDMI and (4) DisplayPort are the latest cable types used to connect monitors to computer - and they carry audio so an additional audio cable is not needed.

HDMI (I have saw this listed) Whatever I did to cause this problem, the computer has troubleshooting. When I clicked on it the following is posted: "Digital Audio (HDMI) High Definition Audio Device. The device appears to be unplugged. Check the connection, plug in the device, then click next. Troubleshooting was unable to automatically fix all of the issues found. Details below: Problems found the speaker, headset, or headphones is unplugged." None of this makes any sense to me because I do not recall unplugging anything...….I am just looking to restore the minimal sound I did at one time have built into my monitor....

Have you checked the cables? Are all securely plugged in?

decided to stop thinking about this problem. If I start changing setting etc. I will have a mess for sure. This all started with just one problem, where did what little sound I had on Windows 10 go? odd

Three possible solutions come to mind.

    1. Buy external speakers - don't depend on the monitor speakers.
    2. Buy an external sound card that plugs into a USB port and has speaker/headphone and microphone jacks.
    3. Do a clean install of Windows 10.

    1. Click Download@MajorGeeks.

    2. Extract the files from the Zip file you downloaded.

    3. Restart Windows in "Safe Mode With Networking".

Note: I don't run Windows 10, have no intention of ever running it and have seen it exactly one time on someone else's computer. That said, all I can do is point you to links.

You said in your first post
If you don't know what you are doing, and you change anything:
    1. Do one change at a time only! Use the computer for at least a day with the change you made.
    2. Write down exactly what you changed and the way you got to the place to change it.
If you follow those two rules, then any change that breaks something can easily be undone.
Since you haven't a clue as to what you changed and we surely don't, it is next to impossible to try to help you undo what you've done.

    Clean install of Windows 10.

Problem solved. The sound decided to start working. The only thing I did different was download and add my updates. That you all for the help...….

Odd. Not sure any lessons were learned here but I'm glad you got it sorted out and hope it sticks. Thanks for posting your followup.
