Need "Special" software

Not sure what forum this should be in but...Here is the scoop.

I "Sold" a guy an upgrade from his old IBM Aptiva P75. I set him all up with a real good deal.

Parts in upgrade:

New 52X rom <-his 24X was dead
P166 & 64MB EDO<- from P75 & 8MB EDO Ram
Asus P5A-B AT mobo and AT chassy /w LED readout
16MB Rage Pci card<-from 2MB onboard trident
101 AT Keyboard

+building system,data backup & format/ win98 install and creating a driver CD

His total bill was $80 canadian.

Anyways time rocked on and and with emails of reminders.. and personal reminders, he has refused to pay. So a phone call was made and he was told to pay up or return the parts; he hung up.

Now.. WHAT should I do in this case? Muscle the parts out of him? Call police or something? ..nahhh.. I should do something acceptabe to being a geek and email him something that will render his STOLEN PC useless..or irritate him anyway.. other that surfing and lite stuff like that he has no computer savy... he should NOT tick the geek off...he should just pay his bill.

Honestly though, I'd just go to the police and report it. Bring an invoice with you.. or if you want to have some fun.. have it REPO'd YEAH YEAH!!!

None the less, I would recommend a legal route - unless the money doesn't mean as much to you, in which case have fun with spam and whatnot. None the less, you gave this guy goods and services with an implicit agreement for payment. Since he's failed to pay, the computer may still be technically yours (however I'm no expert on Canadian, Common, or provincial laws). I would go to the police, explain the situation, see what options there are - you might even be able to charge him with theft, in which case a police presence at his door or subpoena might be enough to scare him into returning the system. It should be noted that the mere threat of legal action (when backed by a legal authority) could settle the problem, especially since most cases never go to court and are settled before the need.

Failing that, try calling his mother and see if she'll lay on a heavy guilt trip.

 

Oooo, I like the Repo man option too! But definitely make out contracts in the future as they make good backup. Just write out a contract, have both yourself and the contractee sign in front of a notaree public, and then have it notarized (which doesn't cost that much and can be tossed into the overal customer charge).

I told him the price on the phone and he said "yah cool sounds good".. I work in close proximity to him every day ..lol! avoids me like the plague... its a bit humerous actually. Pity you didn't place a timelock or timebomb on the hardware - allows them to evaluate or trial before being timed out.

 

I am thinking of creating a batch file of sorts to rename vital bootup files mail it to him via web based mail..as I pm'ed to kodo the guy changed his email addy tonight.. but I'll get it again... real easy..crazies at work and their multi-receipient emails. A timelock or timebomb on the hardware? ..too late now I guess. This makes me sad.. I got along great with him before this.. why did I get THIS treatment? Shoddy character I guess.

To us its a lame little file and kinda "obvious" but not to the target.

Here is my little evil nemis..gonna pass it off as a neat little racing game. cute file name after the execution eh? Dont know what hit them till they reboot or start their machine up again the next day. It renames itself so it prevents him from sending it to anyone else by some bizzarr chance and damaging them.

Actually I just checked and his email has not changed. Oh Boy....better go to bed.

 

That seems too harmless for him.

At least have somethng rename his registry file.

well, I'd say target a few key files. Id go with the comand.com, autoexec.bat, and config.sys, Things that are easily replaced by a system transfer copy. That way hopefully you can get him to come crawling back o you with the money to repair it for him and it would be a simple fix.

This guy is a real pill. I tried to talk to him at work today an tell him we could have a compromise and I'd build him a system kinda like he had before .. but one that WAS expandable and had a rom drive that worked if he'd return the parts. He wouldnt even speak....whatever! .. like grow up. Aparently the rumor around work is that he threw it out but it seems funny my little proggie says his ISP email is still functional. Shame to be paying $25 a month for nothing. Threw it out....Riiiight!


I am debating what to do really.. just let it slide.. or whatever... we will see.

 

Alright i can make you soemthing that will do what ever you want realy. if its a non NT based PC i can have iut blue screen at random intevrals shutdown reboot log off, fill up the HDD i can keep em coming

Whatever you do, don't let him get away with it. Just the fact that he doesn't even want to compromise and work something out, makes him a bigt fu***** looser. Plus the fact that he's obviously coming out the winner no matter what, makes this situation suck even more. I would make his life at work as miserable as possible. Maybe just print fliers explaining the situation(do indicate his name and any other personal info. and post it) However, he's getting off lightly. If this isn't enought to get trough to him...Well, all I can say is an eye for an eye.

The guy that works with him and travels him is a good acquaintance of mine and I explained this compromize that I wanted to work out with the thief and he aparently would agree to nothing.. I just said.....oooookkkkk.

Its just that Clox has given me a good deal before on some hardware <old processor> and i don't like seeing my friends get screwed, i'm sure you know from where i come.
