    Hello all.

    My story:
Windows XP (if you need more info, I can get it, problem is, I can't download anything right now, I'm on another computer other than mine that needs fixin')

Used HijackThis and tried to get rid of any/all programs that weren't supposed to be there (again, I can't really post my log). The ones I think I deleted that caused the problem was a Google Desktop one and an Earthlink TotalAccess one. I got rid of them because they came up as "incomplete" code (I know that's not the right term, I forget what the term is).

Now, my dial-up modem seems to work and "connect" to the internet, then I can't download email or load webpages.

My Norton Antivirus says there are problems with my TCP/IP interface. I have tried restoring my TCP/IP from my Dell System Restore Disk, nothing happened. I also have tried restoring all of Windows XP, it won't even let me begin as it says I have already installed a newer version (updates?).

I have tried system restore. There was only one point to restore from and it didn't go back far enough.

I have completely backed up my computer to a separate hard drive. If it sounds easiest, I am completely willing to completely reboot/restore my computer. I don't know how to go about this (see above).

Thank you for any help, I'll be at this other computer (and at my email) until I find the help I need.

Just for a start, go to the control panel and look in Add/Remove for Earthlink Total Access and remove it. Then reinstall Total Access and see where that gets you. I would also check my settings in Outlook Express if that is what you are using.

    1. Which version of NAV?

    2. What happens when you try and open a webpage or download email?

    3. What is this? My Norton Antivirus says there are problems with my TCP/IP interface. What's the exact message?

Thanks for the initial help approaches. Here's what I did before I read your message:

I ran my Dell Diagnostics CD to check my hardware. Everything came up fine.

I'm running the System Restore CD for my Windows XP. That should be done soon.

As for NAV, I have the 2005 version, I'm in need of an upgrade unless others have better ideas.

I am going to try the Earthlink TotalAccess reboot tonight.

I will post the NAV exact message tomorrow morning unless I get internet access tonight, then I'll just post the good news.

Thank you for the help so far...

    Garrett,

Sounds like your making progress, your Dell restore cd might solve the remaining issues.

If you have the option to leave NAV 2005 off I would do that. You need to check out some of MG's free anti-virus and firewalls here, http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads29.html. AntiVir, Avast, AVG, are just a few good anti-virus programs. Firewalls are here, http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads34.html.

If you need to remove NAV 2005 here is a removal utility from Symantec, it helps get all of it off your computer, you should use Add/Remove first but I would still run the utility to make sure.

Keep us posted on your progress.

This is just a shot in the dark, but I seem to remember something similar to this several months ago. Just for kicks, download and install TCP Optimizer and see if it squares away that connection.

OK, my computer is really f-d up now. I was thinking, as you guys were, that I was making progress, that all flew out the window.

I ran the Windows XP System Restore CD. It "loaded" really slow and never really "finished" like I would expect it to. Basically, I returned to my computer with a black screen and it basically being frozen, requiring me to turn it off. Now if I leave my computer alone for a while, it returns to this black screen and freezes up.

Then I tried removing and reloading Earthlink. I thought this was going to be the answer. My modem dialed, I heard the normal modem sounds, it said it connected (which is what it has been doing the entire time)...then nothing. I got a message that said: "Unable to connect with registration server. Please try again or call 1800EARTHLINK for assistance. 8006 : 12007 "
I've called them before on this issue, they have been of no help.

Now my NAV's error message upon startup has changed. It now annoyingly keeps popping up, 2-3 times every 5-10 minutes, to say: "Symantec Email Proxy cannot scan your email messages because your network is not properly configured." Maybe this means that my TCP/IP problems are fixed and now something else is messed up?

Oh, and now every time I go into the Start menu, my Windows Explorer crashes (runtime error) within a couple of windows (or minutes, I'm not sure which one).

I ran a Network Diagnostic scan. All of them FAILED. The other thing stated was a "WMI Error".

Please don't overestimate my computer abilities. I'm just allright at looking for things, guessing what they do, and trying them out. You know, enough to be dangerous.

At this point, my idea is to dump everything off of my computer and reload everything. I have saved all of my important docs to a freestanding SimpleTech hard drive. I'm totally willing and I have the time to do this, I don't know how to do it though. If anyone wants to walk me through it, please do so with detailed instructions (please don't assume I know how to do anything, as I have to drive back-and-forth to school to get on the internet and the fewer trips the better). I'm on a Dell Inspiron 600m, running Windows XP.

    Thank you in advance.

Best thing would probably be to reinstall the whole thing, seems like a lot of issues are going on at the same time.

If you like to play around with obscure error messages and tinker with your system, then I can recommend that you look in your Event Log and investigate the different System-Errors it reports.

If you want to reset your TCPIP settings, then run this command:
If you want to reset your WMI settings, then run these commands:

Thanks to everyone for their help attempts. I took it to Data Doctors as I became increasingly frustrated. The guy told me my fan wasn't running. I then called Dell, I luckily still had the extended service contract, and they sent someone out to replace my RAM and the fan for free. I then totally reformatted and reloaded everything again (the third time in all). Everything seems to be fine now, knock on wood...

    Thanks again!

I have been unable to surf after trying to check (set) TCP/IPs in safe mode with network support. I get "cannot find server or DNS Error Internet Explorer". I am sure you will need more information.
    TIA
