need to change computer name/documents name

hello tech guys..im new here.i was enquiering to see you you guys can help me with a problem.i have just got this computer from a friend.it has windows xp home edition installed.i am wanting your help if you can i hope you can.i need to change the computer name/documents name to mine.it was made by dell computers with the above operating system.the computer's name is marjorie & documents foulders named majorie aswell i would like to change the name over to mine.please can you help me so i can get the name changed & also can you advise me how to do this.the computer starts up with dell software etc then windows starts with the windows home edition.i would greatly appreciate your help & advice.kenneth

In order to change the name you will need to edit the registry.

Be very careful when you do this because there is no undo in the registry editor.

start>run>typein

regedit

In the window which opens you will see two panes that look like explorer.

Open the tree in the left hand pane by clicking on the cros in the little boxes to the left of the items.

go to

HKeyLocalMachine\software\microsoft\windowsNT\currentversion.

In the right hand pane identify the entry 'registered owner' and right click on it.

Choose modify and type the new name into the dialog box which opens

Click OK

Close regedit and restart the pc.

Do not change any other entry in the registry.

I think you will find that the dreamy is referring to the user account name, not the network name, which the M$ proceedure is appropriate for.

 

thanks guys for the info.i have tryed that.it has changed the network name to the aquiered name but the name that was used/entered when installing windows xp ie computer name & the name name that it says when u open my computer ie/eg C:\Documents and Settings\NAME NAME as being the original owner's name, that is still the same and not change to the name i want.please can you help me with the info of how to change that name to my name.sorry to ask again.hope you can help me out.many thanks guys.take care.kenneth
