    Hello all

WEll, here's the situation. I must change my IP address for reasons of nature rather not discussed:cry:cry.:-o

I am running Comcast biz class T2 connection at home. I have home network with router and several computers connected. Wireless, but secured one. Windows7.

I have tried internet remedies, like powering down modem for 7 hrs; changing MAC address and cloning MAC and releasing IP/ re-acquiring IP. nothing works so far. Maybe I am not doing it right, as nowhere can I find exact step by step guidance on how to.

With this being said, I'd SERIOUSLY appreciate step by step guide on how to change it, if it's even possible. Called Comcast CSR, he refused to do this, it's "against company policy". He said that I do, actually, have dynamic IP, but what kind of dynamic is it, if it does not change no matter what. I know I had to go through same about a year ago, and somehow I managed to change it. But then I was on Windows XP and have no idea how I did it.

Also, every time I try to locate exactly myself via that IP address, results are always off by at least 15-20 miles for that IP physical location. How come?

Your IP is based on the location of the provider's switches & routers, also can be located by the center of your town, such as mine shows when I look it up. I would really not worry about it. Since you have a Comcast business account, you really need to review your agreement and the contract you signed. Especially if you have a Static IP.

Judging from CSR's response, I do have dynamic IP. I asked him if I can have static (just for the sake of having current one changed) and he said yes, but it will cost extra $15 a month and can not be changed thereafter.

My concern is with being pin-pointed based on that IP address. If it is not possible, then I have nothing to worry about. If it is, I do have to have it changed, one way or the other.

Why change it? If it is not broke, do not worry. I have U-Verse, and even though we have a dynamic IP, it in reality is a static due to the way their system works. It is the same way with CC and their business service.

well, I wouldn't be asking for change, if it wasn't "broke". Unfortunately, I was stupid enough to do something that can be tracked back:-o - or so they say - to IP, and that's the only way for them to find me. I am not sure how serious it is or can be, but won't hurt to have it changed. Unless it does not matter, as ISP may keep record of those things and it will come out one way or the other:major. nothing major, but may end up costing me a few grand.
