I am also trying to convert VOB files into AVI for posting on Google Videos or Blogspot.
I read this thread, downloaded Handbrake, and tried to convert my files from a 10-minute super video CD I made that contains 3 VOB, BUP, and IFO files each. After 2 seconds, the process stopped, and my C drive video folder listed "HandBrakeCLI.exe.stackdump". How can I fix this stackdump problem?

Old or not the question is new enough. To convert Vob files I use Virtual Dub Mod, but your problem is going to be the source, camera vob files are not the same as vob files from a dvd movie. Inorder to make them convert correctly to might have to fool around with resizing the source files to a proper ratio. If after loading the vob into V Dub Mod the screen looks normal and is not stretched in one direction or the other you should be good to go, other wise use the filters section under VIDEO to add resize and use default 320x240 (smaller resolution smaller file)or play to find the best following the rules of divx (width divisible by 4 / hieght divisible by 2). Once your satisfied under the Video Tab set to full processing open the compression section, select divx and configure it (smaller bitrate smaller file), and "save as" a new name. You can probably leave the audio alone (direct stream only copies the audio/video but full process reencodes it). Don't set VIDEO to full process with out setting a compression, the default is uncompressed avi and will create a 40-80gig avi if you don't select something else. I normally use V Dub for correcting avi files and typically the first thing I do is to select Direct Stream for video so no encoding takes place but in your case you start with a vob file and you have to encode it to avi.

    Appzalien,
I appreciate your quick response. Unfortunately, I'm extremely new to this kind of technical work. I downloaded Handbrake this morning and am hesitant to download other programs. Your instructions sounded a little complicated for V Dub, and I doubt I'd be able to fool around with it and get it right. Do you happen to know how to use the program Handbrake? If so, if you could give me basic step-by-step instructions on how to convert the files I would be very appreciative.

Sorry about the shortness of my description but it does kind of assume some semblance of knowledge on your part. Virtual Dub and its Mod version are extremely useful and a long standing standard in the avi community. Yes it has alot of options to play with but some basic knowledge should allow you to play with little harm.

the conversions are split into Video and Streams (audio) so that you can handle each separate. Direct Stream mode is basically a copy mode where no encoding takes place, this is great for keeping the quality of the original video while you tweak the audio.

So lets start there, google Virtual Dub Mod and download it from Source forge or somewhere you consider reputible. Its usually a no install program you extract from a zip file, put it where you want it and then create a short cut on the desktop by right clicking VirtualDubMod.exe and selecting "send to desktop" create shortcut. Now you can launch it from the desktop. Start it and open your VOB file with it and it will parse the file (match the audio and video timings). Now open the Video tab and select COMPRESSION (it should by default be set to Full Processing) and then Divx (I'm assuming to have the divx codec installed) and then over to the right click on configure (you will notice the divx rules I mentioned before above the configure button) and check these settings on the first page:

    Home Theater Profile
    1 Pass bitrate 780

on the next tab (codec) select:
Better Quality and leave the rest alone

On the last tab (Video) select:
No Resize or format conversion and leave the rest alone

    and close out the configurator.

If your settings are little different you may have an older version of Divx but it should be close. Now back to V Dub and under the file tab select "Save As" and give it a new name.

If you get an audio error tell me what it is, otherwise tell me how it turns out.

Compress 18 G .avi file using VirtualDub Mod

    Appzalien,

Thank you for your step by step instructions. I have downloaded VirtualDub Mod and gone through the configuration. Now can you please help me use the program to compress my video file MUCH smaller? It is currently an .avi format that is 18 Gigs! I'd like it to be a reasonable size so that I can upload it to the web. Much thanks.

Dawn, I would start over and use AutoGK.

In the input box browse to the first of the 3 vob files (keep all 3 in same folder and AutoGk will combine them all to 1 avi file).
In the output box pick a new name for the file.avi
    Audio will fill in automatically.
Size go with 1/4CD(175mb) or try custom size target: 99mb(or whatever for google video) [Usually the smaller the size the more your audio will be compressed which is okay]
    Then Add Job
    Then Start
Will take some time but should do a decent job.

*AutoGk is just a frontend for Virtual Mod but simpler to understand.

Well you obviously did not follow the tutorial very well, to get an 18gig avi you have the Video section set to full processing but you didn't select divx for compression. The default compression if you select nothing is Uncompressed avi, and that will give you a huge file. You need to select Divx as your compression and follow my instructions to configure it.

    Open the configurator from:
VIDEO>COMPRESSION>DIVX (over to the right is the configure button)

    Home Theater Profile
    1 Pass bitrate 780

on the next tab (codec) select:
Better Quality and leave the rest alone

On the last tab (Video) select:
No Resize or format conversion and leave the rest alone

    and close out the configurator.

I am willing to download AutoGK and try that. But first, I wanted to ask your opinion on another response I got: "Windows Movie Maker will allow you to compress an avi by restricting the bitrate. I have used it successfully many times compressing videos that I upload to my church's website. Most of the 0riginal files are 2G to 6G; the resulting files: 30Mb to 90Mb. WMM is part of XP, so it requires no special download if you have XP or Vista. [I do.] You can find it by clicking on: Start>Programs>Accessories."
I asked this user exactly where in WMM or Start>Programs>Accessories I can compress the file, because it's not obvious to me. Do you think I should try this first, or go ahead with AutoGK?

    Appzalien,
Yes, I followed your directions exactly and configured the compression just as you said. But how do I actually activate the compression?

I have assumed you have divx installed on your computer that will allow you to do this. there is no activation. You open the video tab, select full process (already there cause its default)then click on the compression line and you should get a drop down with multiple selections like this:
(uncompressed rgb) since its on top its default and will give you the large gig files
ATI YUV12 Format Codes (I have cause my card is ATI)
    Cinepak Codec
Divx 6.8 Codec (I have 6.8 and you choose this, just remember to click ok when you come out of the configurator I guess thats the activator you needed)
    ffdfshow (installed on my pc)
    etc.

I'm guessing then, that when you configure the divx as I described you are not clciking OK when you get back to the choices menu and it then defaults back to uncompressed avi.

So I suppose I should add this:

    Home Theater Profile
    1 Pass bitrate 780

on the next tab (codec) select:
Better Quality and leave the rest alone

On the last tab (Video) select:
No Resize or format conversion and leave the rest alone

    and close out the configurator.

    Click OK..............................................

    Does that do it?

You know I went thru all of this expecting you will not get a proper file and I would then do another tutorial to tell you how to correct it. A sort of one step at a time thing. AutoGK is an ok program, But V Dub is my meat and potatoes. Once you know your way around it, you will be able to repair, sync, reconvert and reconfigure both the audio and video of any avi out there to be completely compatible with any converter or viewer. I use it on 70% of avi files I download and even to convert vob movie files to avi straight off the dvd disk.

Thank you so much for all your help. Now I have converted the movie into .avi, compressed it with Windows Movie Maker, and uploaded it with Google Video.

By chance, do you know how to successfully convert iTunes .m4p files into .wav or .mp3 files for use in another movie in Windws Movie Maker? I converted 2 songs I purchased into wav files using Bink and Smacker, but the sound was lost.

You might give the freeware converter SUPER a try. I haven't used it yet but I have heard some good things.

    Code:
    http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html
It might be on the site here as well.
