Need to copy info FASTER!!!

Hi i have a stock pc acer aspire t180 with dual core and i added 3gb ram so it does me for most things cos i don't do gaming but my god does it take forever to copy say from "C" to "D" or from cards to "C" etc. what is the cheapest and easiest way of increasing the copy process a bit??? I know it's a basic question but i'm a learner :-D thanks in advance.

 

It may just be the HDD?
Have you tried giving the HDD a defrag? and ran some maintenance on the PC?

 

hi yeah i keep it clean as a whistle and it's never bogged down. Should i be thinking more space on hdd or maybe just a better one?

Well its typically bottlenecked by the limitation of the lowest speed hardware, thus if you only have a 5400 RPM HD in your PC, maybe upgrading to a 7200 RPM or 10k RPM Harddrive may be an option, but if your copying from Cards to your C drive, you may want to check into the data transfer rate of the cards.

i think its 7,200rpm so mid range haha! think i'll try a good defrag and see the results! thanks for answers guys.

 

What OS are you using?
If it is Vista you can speed up the transfer rate from your external drives but you must be careful when unplugging the drive, you have GOT to use the "safely remove hardware" if you use this.

Type Device Manager into the start menu search box, and hit enter.
Select "Disk drives" and click on the external disk you want to speed up, then right click on the disk and select "properties" then click the tab "plicies" you will then see two options,select "optimize for performance" and hit OK, you will then have to reboot for it to take effect.

This does not work with XP, don't know about Windows 7.
