There's a bunch of files on this laptop running XP Home, and I mean a BUNCH! They all have the same extension and I want to delet them all. There's over 5000 of 'em, maybe 2 or 3 times that, so using the Recycle Bin, or dragging and dropping is pointless. I'd like to just type in a command at the command prompt, or in the recovery console, or boot a UBCD4Win or PECD, and delete them from there. I know the command will be something like del c:\*.*\*.zzz if zzz is the extension. The problem is, the .zzz files are everywhere, in lots of different folders from My Documents, to Program Files, and everywhere else, and they're in all the sub-folders to; like in Program Files, even the HP printer folder has over 200 of these .zzz files. Some malware got in and created hundreds and hundreds of these files and put them everywhere. They have a size of about 16k. I've removed the main malware that created all these files, now I have to get rid of the files. I'd rather not format....

    Hi

Could use something like this more so than the command line as it has a bit of a safety feature built in to say you sure you wish to delete these, then you can untick the ones that may just get through and are not to be deleted.

You can add in the file filter box your own *.zzz* file string, but sadly it doesnt allow root C: to be added you need to add C:\Windows C:\Program files etc but it will search inside their subfolders.

If you have some time, just use the search feature in Windows Explorer and when it is done finding all the *.zzz files, select all (ctrl + a) and delete them.

Luckily the root C: only had about 150 of the zzz files and they were easy to delete after booting to a PECD... I found that if I try to delete the zzz files in Windows, they replicate to the desktop.... so I have to delete 'em from the recovery console or a PECD :(

UPDATE-I think I will just reformat. I ran a full scan with AntiVir, and I cancelled it after it hit 23,152 files!!! All of them are TR.Crypt.F.Gen
