title says it all, i get lag while gaming online. ive looked in all my progs to check if any of them auto update ect or connect to the web automatically but all are disabled or i cant find anymore.

im running norton antivirus and norton personal firewall cus i thought it may be some sort of spyware but it hasnt made any difference.

lag is random and only recently started, i havnt made any changes to my network since the prob arose.

any ideas how to identify this prog or whatever is doing this?

if anymore info is needed please let me know

ive just been trolling thru NPFW logs and found a list of connections to and from my pc

i found a few entries that may suggest spyware to me but im unsure if they are or not, entrys are connections to:

    Connection: money.cafreedom.com(66.17.180.52): http(80).
    Connection: pagead2.googlesyndication.com(216.239.59.99): http(80).
    Connection: a.tribalfusion.com(208.185.101.176): http(80).

i do not recognize these addresses at all and when viewing the pages one says no page to be displayed and other 2 say:

what do you want to find here?
    Nothing to see here!

any ideas would be apreiciated, should i block these maybe or any other suggestions?

Have you done a spyware search on your computer?
It seems like that's something related to spyware.

Also with online gaming, there are ALOT of variables, the end server could be lagging, your computer hardware wise could be lagging. It's just not software that causes it.

    Most likely suspects:
    1. The firewall
    2. The anti-virus software
    3. Background disk defrag is enabled.

Open up Task Manager and click the processes tab. Is anything using your CPU? Or is you System Idle at 99% all the time? Are any processes other than those listed above using more than 20MB of RAM? (Svchost.exe might be, but it's difficult to determine exactly what that is running).

yes i have done a search for spyware and nothing there, i use "Spybot - Search & Destroy"

    its not any of:

    1. The firewall
    2. The anti-virus software
    3. Background disk defrag is enabled.

i installed the norton progs after i started getting the probs in a hope to solve the issue but they made no difference. i checked systems tools like defrag but nothing set to run and i have looked at my processes but nothing has been using CPU while i was looking.

the lag is not all the time its just now and again, random

also i just noticed that windows messenger is logging me in now, i uninstalled it from add/remove in control panel but its still logging me in!?!? ive tryed to set my passport to the defualt by going thru the wizard and change details and then leaving the email and password black and upon completion it says windows is configured to use the passport "<passport>" but when i log out and back in BAM its logged me back in ....

how do i stop this it could be the prob

If you have a process running called "msnmsgrsrvc.exe" or "bling.exe" or "tftp?????.exe" or "windnsd.exe" then you've got a worm (Spybot worm or some other variant). We just had this one on our network. Norton will clean it but not identify it, Housecall often would find it but not clean it. It only affects systems where Windows and IE6 are not fully up-to-date. It seems to be able to hide itself from antivirus software if it is already running.

Manual cleaning is pretty easy. Check your process list for whichever filename you have running (should be in c:\windows\system32). reboot into safe mode, and search for the file name you saw running. Now open up regedit and search for the same filename and delete all the keys that have it in it.

Reboot into normal mode and you should have no more problems. Update Windows and IE ASAP.

The trend Micro site URL http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_WOOTBOT.AS states that "*NOTE: On systems running Windows 95, 98, and ME, Windows Task Manager may not show certain processes. You can use a third party process viewer such as Process Explorer to terminate the malware process. Otherwise, continue with the next procedure, noting additional instructions." http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml for process viewer. This one was created last month and is one of the nastiest ones I have ever seen. We got it at work and out IT guys have not gotten rid of it completely for the last 48 hours. Read the details get your computer off the net until this is fixed. You are a danger to yourself AND others. Removal instructions are on the link I sent you.
