Hi all, i am using a compaq laptop and it is wxga resolution (1280x800), this was good enough for a year or so, but now i need to go higher. I play poker online and i have dont have enough screen real estate to keep multiple tables open. Any solution to this problem would be greatly appreciated. My two thoughts are somehow raise my resolution, or some sort of virtual desktop program that would put subscreens on my desktop that automatically refresh. Im pretty sure my laptop can handle the load of such a program, i just need to find one.

You won't be able to raise the resolution. Most laptops can't even go that high. The monitor itself is your limitation here. Whatever you see under the properties menu is your max. There is no play room on this.

As for the sub screens, I'm not really sure what you mean. Do you mean a program which simply shows each screen but smaller? If that's what you mean, I'm not sure you'll find it. I don't think the windows API actually supports doing something like that. Unless of course the window could be resized manually. But I imagine if that was possible you'd have done it by now.

I really don't see any way you'll be able to manage fitting more onto your screen. There might be a program out there, but I haven't heard of it. You may want to simply consider going with dual display. It's not very popular with laptops but if you have a spare monitor around you could plug it in when at home and then use both at the same time.

Depending on the laptop you may need to buy a USB video card in order to actually be able to run dual display and those video cards cost about 70$ and max out at 1024x768.

I know there are many virtual desktop programs, i was hoping there is one that i could have like 6 different desktops, and one just has frames that show the other desktops. Unfortunately the windows im working with are not resizable. I'll also consider a second monitor, luckily my video card supports that, so i dont need to buy a usb one.

Thanks, hopefully someone else can think of a program that suits my needs.

What OS are you running? If you are running Windows XP I believe there already is a virtual desktop manager (toolbar).

Yep i am using XP, ill look and see if there is a virtual desktop manager, but i need one that i can view all the desktops in real time at the same time.. which i am pretty sure windows doesnt do

Windows has no built in virtual desktops at all. There are programs which provide other desktops, but I know of none that offer what you want. Even if they did it wouldn't be very effective since you'd still have to open the desktop in order to interact with it. Which would still mean a lot of alt tabbing and would just be rather annoying.

The only viable solution I really see is dual display. Or just learning to alt tab more. :)

Alt tabbing is no problem, i just need to be able to see them all at once so that i can know if i have been dealt a new hand. The problem i encounter is i miss it when i get a new hand and then i fold a monster.

The poker game I play with has an option that flashes the toolbar whenever you're dealt a hand or when it's your turn to fold/call/raise. Did you look for an option like that?
