Need to repair Windows ME

I have having problems with my computer and need to repair Windows ME, however, I do not know how to do this. I want to overlay windows and keep the current files and programs on my computer (I do not want to an entire install). THe problem is I am not sure how to do this. I have 4 disks and when I insert them the only options I have is "automatic install" and manaul install." How can I repair/over lay windows without loosing the information on my computer?

If you run the install from within Windows, you will be keep your settings. However, your problems may or may not be fixed. If it doesn't fix it, back up anything you want to keep, reformat and reinstall.

By the way, what problems are you having? ME is loaded with problems.

 

When I close down internet explorer my computer hangs for about 30-60 seconds. At that time I can't do anything. Then all of a sudden everything is fine. I started having this problem after using Spybot or Spyware blaster (can't remember exactly which one, I will have to look at my previous thread from last week). I also used a registry cleaner and I think that may only have made problems worse. Now it seems that nothing is running in the system try and I am not sure what is suppose to be running.

 

What I forgot to add was that in many instances when I shut down explorer, the desk top icon will no longer work. I will click on it and the browser properties box will appear. Once I restart my comp everything returns to normal.

 

You could try things like System File Checker and repairing Internet Explorer, but installing Windows over itself is most likely to succeed and what I would recommend.

If so, either do it from Windows (start the CD in Windows and see if it has an install option), or enable the Bios to boot from CD, reboot with the CD in the drive and follow the setup menu.

As long as you don't format or play around with partitions. Just install over the current setup.

 

Personal opinion on how to fix Windows ME: Backup your documents, get Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 2000, Windows XP, pretty much anything other than Windows ME and install that version of Windows. Windows ME is not only the worst version of Windows, its probably the worst OS I've encountered. Good luck.
