Ok, I updated my BIOS which was a mistake because now I'm gettig checksum errors when I run my CPU test. Computer is acting a little funny after the upgrade as well so I figured that it was because of the update and I want to reset everything. Went to set up utility clicked to restore to original settings and still getting checksum error. Wanted to know if there is any way I could reset this stupid thing. Its an old unit but it ran real good for me before I done this. Misc Info--Running windows 98se-AMD K-6Processor-it is an old Compaq 5204 so I know it would not be cost effective to do a whole to it . Its a good computer to experiment with things on which is why I want to keep it around. Thanks!

CMOS CHECKSUM ERROR is perfectly normal after updating the BIOS. Basically, the BIOS has to redetect all your hardware and is finding all your componants for the 1st time (remember you've flashed the BIOS with a new binary file).

All you need to do is enter the BIOS (press DEL @ P.O.S.T.) and save settings and exit. This should get rid of that message.

There may be some additional settings that need reconfiguring (like CPU speed), but that's normal.

I'm afraid using system restore in windows WILL NOT reflash the BIOS to the old version. The restore feature is only designed to work with windows (specifically the windows registry).

If you really feel that going back to the original BIOS is best, you'll have to locate the BIOS binary file from the manufacturers website and run the FLASH utility again (using this older .BIN file).

I would advise against it though for one simple reason. The manufacturer obviously thought the mobo's BIOS needed updating and is therefore beneficial to the stability of the board.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thaks for the help searcher, I'll figure it out on which way to go. I'm still basically tweaking things so it will be a trial and error process for me which is fine because I always learn something.

    Here's bios guide:

Just so ya Know, when ever you flash bios to new version or to a previous or to the original version, all bios setting will return to thier default settings, which are safe settings for the most part but those are not always the best settings for performance & such.
So if you flash to the original or what ever version you had, you may still need to make some changes in your bios settings, use the guide I posted above.

Just because there is a bios update, doesnt mean you need it.
What an Bios update fixes is usually very specific, details on what it would fix or apply too would be avaible at the Web were you download from.

If your not having problems ya probably dont need it.

Last note! you probably can just keep your newly updated bios, just adj. your settings to suit your setup.
