    Hi everyone :)

I am working out of a home office at the moment (not my home). The computer here is an HP Pavillion a1740n Vista premium OS. I would like to setup a network so I can work from my home (10miles away) using my new Toshiba laptop, Vista Premium OS. The office has wireless broadband and I have wireless at my home as well.

I have remote access to the accounting software I am using but I have no access to any other files on the office computer.

Is there a simple solution? :confused

I have to clear it with my boss, but I believe there is a 98 or XP machine (can't remember what it's running) I can use as a server if need be.

There are many ways to do this, probably the easiest is to use the free version of software from this site: http://www.logmein.com

You can also use Remote Desktop or VNC, but you may have to make some adjustments to the router of firewall to get them working.

Thank you JP. I would like something that's fairly secure. Would you recommend one over the other in terms of security?
I've seen VNC before but have never heard of logmein. Does that use a website to access the work computer from home? Or is there software similar to VNC?

Remote access options usually offer a secure version. Many times, to get the version that supports encryption, you have to upgrade to the paid version for that feature. You can get free versions of VNC that include encryption.

All of these programs will need to install some software, with the exception of Remote Desktop Connection (it is the pre-installed MS software to do this) By using a website service such as www.logmein.com you don't have to do nearly as much work with you firewall, since both computers connect to the logmein server. This allows you to skip the port forwarding setup in your firewall to allow an inbound connection. I don't believe the free version of logmein supports encryption however.

VNC let you connect to your computer directly with no 3rd party controlling your traffic.

LogMein and few other services install on your computer an application that connects to their server and you connect to your computer through their server.

Personally, I trust my own connection using VNC with it native encryption.

This page describes option to find your computer on the Internet, http://www.ezlan.net/myip.html

    This for VNC, http://www.ezlan.net/vnc.html
