Need web cam driver

I have an ancient Intel web cam, model CS431, and I cannot get the WinXP drivers to work. They are readily available from several online sources, including directly from Intel at this link. The driver does not have an installer, so it must be installed via the Device Manager and/or the Hardware Wizard. No problem, that's my preferred method of installing drivers anyway, but it it errors out with "Cannot install this hardware". I attached a screen shot. I followed the steps in the README that comes with the driver, but they're the standard steps I'd do anyway, and there's no 'trick' or step I'm missing (or is there :confused).

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    Hi dlb

Think you have done exactly what I would have done and the instructions to manually installing drivers, even in that guide from Intel are clear, so no mistakes would likely be the cause,

Just wonder if the device is already listing in Device Manager and this is causing the issue, with the no plugged in open Dev Mgr and then open the USB branch, then plug in the cam and refresh Dev Mgr and when the device lists as USB or even as unknown right click and uninstall it.

Then click View > Show Hidden Devices and check for any grey'd out devices and delete/uninstall them.

Then reboot and try installing via method 1 from intel first.

Thanks.... as I'm sure you know, I'm somewhat adept at installing drivers and fixing driver issues. This one has me stymied. I've tried the cam on 4 different PCs, and one of 'em was a clean install of XP with only the OS and drivers installed; nothing else. The exact same thing has happened on all PCs. I've tried everything you mentioned and one thing that shows up with 'hidden devices' enabled in the Device Manager is "Serial" under non-PnP drivers and it has a yellow exclamation point. When I remove the cam, it disappears. So they're related. I think maybe the drivers are for SP1 or pre-SP1 (SP0). Who knows. It's not a big deal.... I found this cam in a box of junk and thought it would be cool to get it working.... oh well....
    :(
