Computer: HP system: Win XP Media Center (same as XP Pro)

My computer would power off in normal mode but not in safe mode and after running CHKDSK etc etc I need to do a non destructive repair install and if that doesn't work I'll "bite the bullet" and do a complete clean install

I am trying to do a Repair install from my Recovery drive and after -- "run>D:\i386\winnt32.exe /unattend"

I keep getting..."The option to upgrade will not be available at this time because Setup was unable to load ythe file D:\i386\WINNTUPG\NETUPGRD.DLL
The system cannot find the file specified.
    "

Any recommendations on IF I should try to install the missing DLL?
Or it looks like I need the folder in the i386 folder of WINNTUPG. I looked for it and it wasn't there

When attempting a repair, you should use the same version of Windows as what is currently installed. Since some files are different, Media Center is not the "same" as XP Pro. If you changed versions (example: PC shipped with XP Pro pre-loaded but you later installed Media Center), the OEM restore partition or CDs will not work for repair.

If this doesn't fix the issue, read on...

It is possible to restore a missing file without doing a repair or reload, provided...

    • You have access to a PC running the identical version of Windows you can copy the file onto a USB drive or burn a CD from, and
    • You can get the PC missing the file to boot up (at least in Safe Mode) so you can copy (drag & drop) the missing file into its correct location.

    Hope this helps. :)

This computer came with Win XP Media Center and I never changed it. I have learned that XP Media Center is XP Pro but with the media center module added to XP Pro.

I have the original recovery disks from HP for XP media center.

I have looked for the DLL file and can't find it anywhere. It's not on the recovery partition.
The folder "WINNTUPG" it should be in doesn't exist either.
    D:\i386\WINNTUPG\NETUPGRD.DLL

I saw on another thread somewhere "plodr" showed someone where to download a missing DLL file etc

I don't want to mess with DLL's unless someone with more experience than me knows how to replace it and with a clean file copy

    Greetings, Electro-User.

    Couple of quickies:

    1. If possible, run a System File Check from an elevated command prompt with your Windows CD loaded. The SFC should attempt to replace the missing file(s). A quick tutorial for running the SFC is located here.

    2. If the SFC is not successful, then try this: copy the entire i386 folder from your installation CD to your hard drive, per MS KB 315349.

I have attached a copy of the NETUPGRD.DLL, but be advised: this is from a Microsoft Windows XP Home CD. I have no idea if there are any differences between the two file versions.
