Needing Help With Encryption

My new job has a requirement to have file encryption. They recommend Win 10 Enterprise with Bitlocker, which adds $300-$400 cost. My HP Laptop is less than 3 months old running Win 10 Home 64.

Are there programs to offer File Encryption without the large cost, or do I need to simply bite the bullet?

Win 10 Pro ($199US) has Bitlocker (in Control Panel).

 

Thank you for the links MaxTurner and mdonah. There is a webcast in a few weeks to review this and I will come back to say what the overlords demand for protection. I am hoping the $85 for Symantec Drive Encryption will suffice.

Print it, show the overlords, and hope they don't ask you any questions.

 

The thing is that all of these drive encryption softwares may use different encryption algorithms. If "the overlords" are running Bitlocker on their machines, it may not decrypt the files encrypted with other software and THEY may not wish to install anything else on their machine(s).

If "the overlords" say Bitlocker, then THAT is what the OP needs.

 

I would ask them to spring for the cost of a new OS, it is their requirement. Same goes for paper and ink if a printer is required. Photoshop doesn't come cheap either, I would hope that isn't another requirement. Sounds like you live in the states to me. We also put in on average 25% more time at the job than our European counterparts, or so I have read. I am growing sick and tired of paying corporate Americas way.

 

I live in Las Vegas, Nevada and to use my own system means some investment by myself. I work about 10 -12 hours a day.

 

I could point you to Win 10 Enterprise for a lot less than $300 — $400. But, it would be an earlier version (1511 build 10586) and I couldn't guarantee that it would update your current Win 10 Home. You might need to do a clean install on a second partition. Then, if you do, I don't know if your Office 365 (if you're running that) subscription would transfer over.

 

It seems I mispoke about the Win 10 Enterprise. The place i bought it from dropped it and only carries Win 10 Pro. Sorry about that.

 

You should still be able to use Win 10 Pro for your file encryption because it DOES contain Bitlocker, Go to http://www.softwicious.com shop for Operating Systems (it's where I got my Win 10 Enterprise). When you pay, you'll get a Product Key and links to download the ISO. When you've got your Key, right click Computer, select Properties and change Product Key. When you enter the Pro Key, Windows should download and install the features necessary to bring your Home Version up to Pro including Bitlocker.

When I was running Win 10 Insider Preview, initially I received Core because the UEFI embedded Product Key I have is for Win 8.1 Core. I changed the Product Key in Win 10 Insider Preview to a Pro Key I have. Windows then downloaded and installed the features for the Pro version of Win 10 Insider Preview.

If his bosses are running Bitlocker, he needs to as well. They may not want to install additional software on their computers to decrypt files he sends them that are encrypted with other software. Bitlocker may not decrypt files that are encrypted with other software because of different encryption algorithms.
