Hey... Okay, first off I appreciate any help or direction you may offer, but secondly I need some help confused.

I mean to host a server for a game. It's got to be setup so that anybody can redirect their game to go to my ip (via no-ip or something similar.) I don't understand this process entirely. I have read a lot about it, but more often than not it feels like I'm reading something that's written in a different language.

The first problem I have is figuring out how to configure my local area connection. Is there anything that is particular to Windows XP that needs to be done in here? I have found that I have several ip addresses avaliable to me and it is confusing to pick which one to use in here and in the configuration of the server. I went in dos and ipconfig /all and it came up with a large list of things.

The most successful I've been is when I made a static address, but it was lagging and it wouldn't let anything but the server and the game get online. I came back to mess with it because the server was lagging like it only had constricted access to the internet and I managed to even lose that progress ~:cry. Something in particular that may be wrong is that my computer doesn't have a DNS server for some reason? Or, at least it doesn't come up as being a number like other people's does. It is a bunch of letters followed by %1, or %2.

In order to get this far I had to go in and edit the registry under the advice of a site in order to allow my computer to host. This is why I ask if there's anything else that I should be doing to the computer itself.

It would be infinitely appreciated if anybody could help me out, or at least link me somewhere that could. I feel like I must be over-complicating this somehow.

    Thank you!

    Hey,
for anybody who is kind enough to have read this-
I have managed to get it up again, and to get it so that the internet will also run. I think I have got it right, but it still lags. Could the internet be responsible for this (and my bad networking skills,) or is this something that the computer itself does?

In most cases the upload (information from your computer to the Internet) is much slower then the download.

I do not know your Internet connection specs and how it work, but might be that your connection is not suitable to host a server.

    Thank you for your reply.

Here is the stuff I could find out.

On the speed test it said that for
    download: 2535kbps (316.9kb/sec)
    upload: 425kbps (53.1kb/sec)

and on the free bandwidth test it said it was
    2.4 megabytes per second
    storage: 240.5 kilobytes/sec
    file download: 4.3 Seconds

    I use dsl.

Also, my computer says that I've used 91% of its memory.
    99128MB out of 106GB.

    I don't understand this entirely.

The Internet speed doea not look like the probelm.

I do not know what "91% of its memory.
99128MB out of 106GB" maens. No personal computer can run 108GB memory.
It is probably the hard drive, and if it is so full (and probably not defrag) it can slow thing down. My guess is that your computer is tuned well to perform fast.

    Pardon.... I made a typo. I haven't used 91%, I've only used 9%.
    I'm very sorry. >_>

-99128MB out of 106GB" maens. No personal computer can run 108GB memory.
Actually, I got that information from Diskeeper... I defrag it all the time. There's always an odd 17 fragments left (except for one golden week,) but I know that it is not the problem. I'm not quite sure what the problem with it is. I'm going to go open it again to double check that number, too, since I messed up already.

No, that is correct. The amount of space has changed a little bit, but it is out of 106GB. I don't know where you're getting 108 from. Excuse me. >_>

I am sorry for my mistake!
Thank you for having replied to me. The problem is still unresolved, but I am beginning to lose resolve in fixing it. I imagine The trouble with it really is the DSL connection.
