Have you set your encryption on the router? That would do it.

what you would have to do is enter your routers setup, then set either WEP or WPA password keys ( WPA is preferable as its more secure ), your manual should give you the steps to set a wireless encryption WEP/WPA key.

what router do you have make and model name?

By having one of these only users who have the key when connecting to a wireless network can attach and use the network/internet, users who do not have the key cannot use your network.

Some nice info from our resident network guru Cat5e http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Security.html

Then you need to follow the steps to set up the WEP or WPA key in Wireless Security on the Router, and put same key in your WiFi properties for the particular Laptop. If the desktop computer is connected via Cat-5e, you do not have to worry about the key, due to it is not connected via a wire. If WiFi, same as Laptop, then you need the same key that you put on the Laptop, in order to secure.

Also, since you have an open network, where do you live? What this means, is that advertising your network as an open network, you are responsible for anything that anyone does on your network (ie SPAMming others with SPAM, downloading Porn, hacking others), and you could actually end up loosing your connection from your ISP.

I would suggest going to http://www.dlink.com, and learn how to set the security up on your Router, along with changing the administrator name and password from 'Admin'.
