I am using nero 6 ultra edition and a sony52x burner. When I go to record a disc it will not let me burn at a speed higher than 40x. I am using 52x discs. When I select the burn speed, it will let me set it as high as 52x if there is no disc in the burner... but when I insert the disc it resets the limit at 40x. This is really anoying. I have another computer with a 52x burner running nero 6, and the same blank discs that lets me record at 52x. Am I missing something here?

Are they identical burners, or different brands? The burning software needs to identify your burner specifically, and Nero may be reading it as an older/slower model. Have you updated Nero to it's latest version? Newer updates usually include newer databases for what burners it supports. You might also nose around Nero's site to see if they claim support for your drive. It's also possible your drive isn't physically capable of running at 52x. A LOT of drives fall far short of their rated speeds in the real world. You might look for some indepent reviews of your drive & see how their speed tests came out.

have you tried running the nero info tool accesible through your start menu under the ahead nero listing this should tell you the max read and write speeds for burner
also nero generally selects the max safe speed for burning which will take into account things like media etc on your other pc is it a different make burner as some are more picky with media than others
and like gt says check the website for support for your burner

I have updated to the latest version. There is no listing on the nero site for my model. Then I cheked the nero info tool and it tells me it has a max write speeed of 40x and a max read speed of 12x! That is a shock. For a burner rated at 52x 32x 52x those speeds are unacceptable. Looks like I will have to take it back.

If true then yes it is unacceptable but seeing as nero has no support for your burner maybe its not getting its info right
have you tried any other burning software just to double check
nero does support a vast amount of burners id be curious as to your make/model

Yes good call... I was thinking of trying the software that came with it just to see. The burner is a Sony and the model is CRX230A-U. It is not a rare model as far as I know. Is it likely that if I wait a while there may be nero support for it in the near future?

Very likely. Updating for the newest drives is an ongoing process. Good chance their next update will include yours. Sony's a common brand.
